MaryAnn Black, MSW, LCSW
MaryAnn Black holds a Masters in Social Work Degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a
Bachelor of Arts degree from Benedict College in Columbia, SC. Ms. Black has
provided Durham families with professional service for more than 30 years as an
accomplished clinical social worker. In 1994, she was named “Social Worker of the
Year” by the State of North Carolina and later the same year by the National Association
of Social Workers.
MaryAnn served as a Durham County Commissioner from 1990 – 2002, and was Chair
of the Durham Board of County Commissioners from 1996-2002. She has been
characterized as “a good representative of Durham….a thoughtful voice for moderation
and a public official who has skillfully practiced the act of compromise”. She was
President of the Durham Downtown Rotary and the first female Chair of the Greater
Durham Chamber of Commerce Board (2006). MaryAnn currently serves on numerous
boards and committees, including the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce Board,
Durham Downtown Rotary, Durham Performing Arts Center Oversight Committee,
Triangle Community Foundation Board, SunTrust Board of Advisors, Research Triangle
Regional Partnership Board, Durham Public Schools Superintendent’s Business Advisory
Council, and North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund Commission. She was a
member of the Durham County Hospital Corporation Board from 1998-2002.
MaryAnn now serves as Associate Vice President for Community Relations for the Duke
University Health System, where she works to establish partnerships with the city, the
county and other agencies and organizations to benefit every citizen regardless of race,
background, or financial status. She is a valuable link between the Health System and
the diverse communities it serves. She has already initiated many strategies to enhance
the health system’s relationship with local government, community leaders, the faith
communities and other groups that support the health and human service needs for the
people of Durham.
MaryAnn has received numerous awards for work in the community during her career.
Her most recent awards include the Samuel DuBois Cook Society 2008 Distinguished
Service Award, the Family and Children’s Services 2007 Community Service Award,
2006 Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce Circle of Influence Diversity Award, 2005
Women-In-Action Elna B. Spaulding Founder’s Award, and 2005 Triangle Business
Journal Top 25 Outstanding Women in Business, and the North Carolina Central
University Social Work Department’s 1st. Annual Award for Outstanding Leadership and
Service to the Social Work Profession.
