Teacher Guidelines:
The following guidelines are supplied to enable teachers to carry out valid and consistent
assessment using this internal assessment resource.
As candidates have access to web tasks, skills based questions should be altered or
replaced by questions of a similar level of difficulty. For other questions the values (eg the
temperatures in question 3) should be changed.
The assessment schedule supplied with this task must be adapted by the provider to give
examples of the evidence that is expected from students.
Context/setting:
The assessment contains skills questions and problems relating to sunshine hours and
temperatures.
Conditions:
This assessment is a class closed book test, needing about 50 minutes.
Students will require access to the Level 3 Calculus formula sheet.
Resource requirements:
Access to a computer or graphics calculators is acceptable.

James’ teacher has asked him to create a mathematical model for the temperatures for
a cloudless and windless day in February.
He has been told that the lowest temperature was 7oC at 3am and the highest
temperature was 29oC at 3pm.
James decides to use a trigonometric model for the temperature.
(a)
Determine a trigonometric equation that models the given data from midnight (at
the start of the day) to midnight (at the start of the next day one day) ie over the 24
hour period of the day.
(b)
Evaluate the model.
(c)
Use the model to find the temperature at midnight.
(d)
Use the model to find the temperature at mid day.

Give one time when the temperature is 200 .
