ABET FELLOW Nomination Guide ABET 415 North Charles Street Baltimore, MD 21201 ABET Fellow Nomination Guide I. INTRODUCTION Established by the ABET Board of Directors in 1988, the ABET Fellow designation is awarded by the Board, upon recommendation of the Awards Committee, in recognition of individuals who have given sustained, quality service to engineering, technology, applied science or computing education and to their respective professions through the activities of ABET. Each recipient receives a distinctive ABET lapel pin, a certificate, and a complimentary copy of each year’s ABET Accreditation Yearbook and Annual Report for five years. Letters and other publicity are sent to the recipients’ employers, professional societies, and appropriate publications upon consultation with the recipient. The Fellow Subcommittee of the ABET Awards Committee is responsible for evaluating all nominations submitted and to recommend, through the Awards Committee, a maximum of five (5) candidates to the Board of Directors. The successful nominees (and their nominators) will be informed of the selection in September and will receive their Fellow pins at an awards ceremony held at the Annual Meeting of the ABET Board of Directors. Nominations and references should be sent to: ABET Awards 415 North Charles Street Baltimore, MD 21201 II. NOMINATION DEADLINE DATE The deadline for submission of nominations is May 31. This deadline is fixed and inflexible. It applies both to the nomination form and to the reference forms. III. NOMINATORS AND THEIR BASIC FUNCTIONS Anyone who is currently serving or has previously served on the ABET Board of Directors, commissions or committees, or as an ABET program evaluator may submit one or more nominations. Nominators are expected to follow the instructions contained in this document. Specifically, they must use the appropriate Fellow Nomination and Reference forms and adhere to space limitations in these forms. Copy must be typed, using 10-point or larger type. Handwritten forms are not acceptable. Nominators are expected also to send a reference form and a copy of the completed nomination form to all individuals who have agreed to give a reference, in sufficient time to allow the completed forms to reach ABET Headquarters by the stated deadline date. IV. CRITERIA Recipients of the Fellow of ABET award should be considered outstanding contributors to engineering, technology, applied sciences or computing education and their respective profession. Any of the following criteria uniquely or in combination will be used in the selection process: ABET Fellow Nomination Guide substantive contributions to ABET including, but not limited to: improvement of the accreditation process; creative work at the interfaces between ABET and its constituent societies, universities, institutes, industry, and government and the public; or long-range leadership that positively affects technical education; formal involvement in ABET as a program evaluator, commission member, committee member, and/or representative director for at least five years; participation as a member of ABET visiting teams and contributions to the criteria, policies, and/or procedures related to accreditation, whether through ABET or through participating society activity; service in an ABET capacity in addition to that found in one of the Commissions. Outstanding contributions, in one of the areas listed, may offset less significant contributions in others except in unusual circumstances; recognition is limited to currently active individuals, or not later than three years after an individual ends formal ABET involvement. Persons involved in the current year’s Fellow evaluation and selection process (i.e. Members of the Awards Committee and Fellow Subcommittee) are not eligible to be nominated for the ABET Fellow Award. V. FELLOW NOMINATION FORM This section contains suggestions for completing the ABET Fellow Nomination Form. Exceeding the space provided in each block of the form will automatically disqualify the nomination. Attachments should not be appended. They will be discarded prior to consideration by the ABET Fellow Subcommittee. Item 1 - Personal Data: Provide complete and accurate information, without abbreviations (except for obvious ones, such as State abbreviations). Item 7 - Tangible Evidence: List the nominee’s publications, conference or workshop presentations, or other tangible evidence of unique accomplishment in ABET program accreditation. Item 8 - ABET Activities: List ABET Board of Directors, commission and committee memberships, offices held, and visitor service together with the number of years served. The list should be in chronological order with the most recent activity last. For each of the areas designated below in which contributions have been made, describe briefly: the specific activity and/or appointment; the specific dates of service; and the specific responsibility (officer, committee chair, member, etc.) Please note that service as a designated member is different than service as an alternate or as an observer. Please be specific about the activity and the service. * ABET Board of Directors * Engineering Accreditation Commission * Technology Accreditation Commission * Applied Sciences Accreditation Commission * Computing Accreditation Commission * Committees of the ABET Board * Program Evaluator * Other Item 9 - Non-ABET Accreditation Activities: Describe program accreditation activities in the candidate’s professional society (e.g., AIChE, ASME, IEEE, etc.). The list should be in chronological order with the most recent activity last. Item 10 - References: References must be submitted on the appropriate form; no letters will be considered. Each nomination must be supported by a minimum of three (3), but no more than five (5), references. At least two out of the minimum three references must be submitted by ABET Fellows. To ensure that at least three (3) reference forms are received, it is recommended that the nominator solicit five references, with at least three (3) from Fellows. The ABET Fellow Subcommittee will consider no more than five references. ABET Fellow Nomination Guide Persons eligible to serve as references include past or present ABET Board members, past or present Commissioners or committee members (except as noted), and past or present accreditation visitors. Present members of the Awards Committee and Fellow Subcommittee are ineligible to serve as references. A list of Fellows is attached. The nominator should provide all persons submitting references with a copy of the completed nomination form as a source of information. The nominator must make certain that all persons submitting references are qualified to judge the candidate. The completed reference forms must be sent in order to be received by ABET Headquarters by the May 31st deadline. VI. RESUBMISSION OF NOMINATION The ABET Fellow Subcommittee will reconsider the case of an unsuccessful candidate the year immediately following first submission, provided the nominator submits a letter to ABET Headquarters requesting reconsideration and updating the nomination with new information not exceeding one 8 ½ x 11 inch type-written page. The nominator has the alternative option of submitting a completely new nomination with references.
