The Most Dangerous Game:
Rainsford initially claims that animals can not feel fear nor can they reason.
This idea, seemingly, would not apply to humans. However, many of the sailors
Zaroff initially hunted died due to lack of reason. Discuss how Rainsford not only felt
fear but had to use reason, in order to survive. Without the use of the tricks he had
learned in previous hunts and the war, would he have survived? Also, does the size
or strength of an animal provide better/worse chances of survival? Many of the
sailors were in top physical condition.
The Monkey’s Paw:
Each character (Sgt. Major Morris, Mr. White, Mrs. White and Herbert) all play
a part in the fate of the story. Explain how Sgt. Major Morris and Herbert could have
changed the course of the story had they made better/different choices.
Or: Did the events in the story occur due to tampering with fate, bad luck or
coincidence?
The Rocking Horse Winner:
Much has been mentioned in the story about the greed Paul’s mother showed,
which took the place of any affection she might have had for her children. However,
greed is evident through the other characters as well. Explain how Paul and Uncle
Oscar also show signs of greed and materialism. How did greed and materialism
contribute to Paul’s death?
Or: What changes occur in the relationship between Paul and his mother, and what
causes these changes?
Sunday in the Park:
Justice, behavior and the roles of men and women are themes presented in
the story. Choose one of the themes and explain how it plays a major role in the
story. How do the characters contribute to the theme or try to break the stereotype
of that theme?
