Job Description
Watershed Restoration Coordinator
The Watershed Restoration Coordinator is responsible for successfully coordinating and
managing volunteer restoration and other stewardship projects associated with post-flood river
systems in Colorado and other disturbed areas. In addition to managing restoration projects, the
coordinator will also fill various project-team roles, manage outreach/recruitment events, and act
as a liaison between Wildlands Restoration Volunteers and land management agencies. This
work includes the development and management of other WRV stewardship projects,
fundraising, the coordination of people and resources, scheduling, project-related budget
management, field work, working collaboratively and in isolation, working with construction
contractors, and a commitment to the WRV Mission.
Project Management and Program Development (65%)
Project Management
The Fort Collins office of WRV organizes about twenty five restoration and stewardship projects
each year. All program staff support the effective planning and execution of these projects in a
way that provides a safe, rewarding, and enlivening volunteer experience, while accomplishing
tangible high quality ecological goals on the ground. The Watershed Restoration Coordinator
oversees a subset of the annual project schedule, which may include projects managed by the
Boulder office.
Act as “WRV Staff Liaison” (WSL) to the project leadership team for approximately 10 projects
per season. This role includes recruiting volunteers, conducting project-related outreach,
communications with registered volunteers, logistical support, contractor management, agency
and private land owner relations, pre and post-project admin, and providing official staff
representation at the project and for any related media coverage. Fill vacant team roles as needed
(Project Leader, Project Support/Cook, Technical Advisor, Crew Leader, or Tool Manager).
Work professionally with agency staff, land owners, partner non-profit organizations, and
businesses who are part of the Big Thompson River Restoration Coalition.
Program Development
Coordinate with agency partners in the Cache La Poudre and Big Thompson River watersheds to
develop watershed scale restoration projects such as road obliteration, post-flood river
restoration, post-fire restoration, and other restoration projects that are coordinated across
multiple properties over time and to accomplish multiple objectives.
Supervise Interns
 Hire, train and supervise one as many as two interns per season.
 Provide periodic feedback on intern performance to Colorado Northern Regional
Director, and develop new internship programs as needed.
Agency Relations
 Maintain professional relationships with some of our existing land agency partners and
private land owners, especially as they relate to the Big Thompson River Restoration
Coalition. Agency partners constitute one of our two most important client bases. The
other is our volunteer base.
 Meet with agencies and land owners to develop projects scopes, plan and implement
projects, manage contracts, provide invoicing, etc.
Outreach and Marketing (10%)
WRV actively recruits volunteers from Colorado and beyond to take part in restoration projects
and other WRV activities. Even with a participation level of 3,500 volunteers annually, and a
30% return rate, ongoing recruitment is essential to maintaining a vibrant volunteer community.
While all staff participate in some outreach activities, the Watershed Restoration Coordinator is
responsible for the partial implementation of WRV’s outreach program in the communities
impacted by Colorado’s Northern Colorado Office.





Identify opportunities to project WRV messaging to key segments of the community,
based on targets identified in the marketing and outreach plan. Offer presentations, staff
outreach booths, attend meetings, etc. with a focus on the Loveland and other nearby
communities affected by the 2013 floods.
Assist in the development of project-related outreach materials as needed, in conjunction
with the Stewardship Coordinator of the Fort Collins Office.
Develop regular positive press for WRV activities associated with the FC office by
identifying and maintaining appropriate media contacts, placing stories and press releases
in media outlets, etc.
Work with Volunteer Coordinator in Boulder to acquire collateral materials (newsletters,
shirts, hats, office supplies, etc.) for use on projects.
Serve as an active member of the Steering Committee of the Big Thompson River
Restoration Coalition and other WRV committees.
Volunteer Leadership Development (15%)
WRV projects are led by trained volunteer leadership teams. WRV continuously recruits, trains,
and mentors new leaders to meet project needs, and all staff contribute to this critical process at
different levels. The Watershed Restoration Coordinator is responsible for assisting in the
development and management of the following leadership roles and skill areas out of the Fort
Collins Office:
 Tool Manager
 Restoration and other Crew Leader Skills
 Project Support/Cooking
Fundraising (10%)
 Identify and develop new funding sources for WRV projects and programs, and write
grants as needed. Work closely with CNRD on all fundraising efforts in an attempt to
reduce redundancy and provide a professional face to our funders and donors.
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility
to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification
document form upon hire.
Selection and retention in this position is contingent on a successful background investigation.
