La Sierra University Honors Student Scholarships September, 2002 In addition to need-based financial aid and scholarships, there are three kinds of scholarships available to Honors students at La Sierra University. The first two kinds are available automatically to Honors students, and the third kind is competitive. 1. Honors Program Scholarships These scholarships are given automatically to all students in the Honors Program. For the 2002-2003 academic year, these scholarships are given on the following schedule: First year in the Program: $330 Second year in the Program: $660 Third year in the Program: $990 Fourth year in the Program: $1320 For all of these scholarships, the year in the program is based on units completed, rather than calendar years. To be eligible for the fourth-year level funding, the student must be completing an Honors Scholarship Project; students not completing an Honors Scholarship Project may still receive the third-year level funding in their fourth year. 2002-03 is the first year these scholarships have been implemented; they are currently 1/3 of our peer-normed targets. Students from HTCC member schools will be considered as being in the Program from the start of the Program at HTCC member schools for this schedule, rather than the beginning of the Program at La Sierra University (as most transfer students are considered). 2. GPA-based Scholarships For the 2002-03 school year, standard GPA-based scholarships for transfer students with GPA’s greater than or equal to 3.5 is $1500, and for students greater than or equal to 3.8 is $2000. Additional scholarships are available for the second and subsequent years at La Sierra University. These amounts are intended to gradually increase. As students must have a 3.5 GPA to graduate with University Honors designation, Honors students nearly all qualify for these scholarships (though a student may temporarily dip below a 3.5 GPA and not qualify for these scholarships). 3. Competitive Scholarships Students may apply in March for the next academic year’s scholarships and awards based on academic excellence, citizenship, campus involvement, and financial need. Many Honors students receive these scholarships and awards, and a representative of the Honors Program sits on the selection committee.
