Alief ISD Social Studies Lesson Plans 5th Grade Unit 5 Civil War Amendments Date: _______________ Desired Results: (Unit Understanding) The victory of the North led to several amendments designed to insure the rights of Americans. Unit Question: Did the Civil War bring ex-slaves to full equality as Americans? Assessment: Objective assessment of student written responses. Time Allotted: 5 days Objective/TEKS: 5.4E I can summarize the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendment as well as why they were created. Anticipatory Set: (Universal Generalization) (Hook) Winners in a conflict Topics: During Wellness time, divide the class in two teams to play a competitive activity. Later, give each contestant a prize. The teacher allows each student from the winning side to allow the students from the losing side to keep their prize or allow the students from the winning side to take the prizes from the losing side. Begin a class discussion and compare the thoughts and feelings of the winning students to the losing students. After the discussion, compare and contrast the thoughts and feelings with the Universal Generalization: Winners in a conflict usually impose their will on the losers. Civil War Amendments 13, 14 and 15. usually impose their will on the losers. Instructional Input: (Line) Modeled/Guided Practice Using an analogy similar to a car that is broken down on the road, what did the nation do about the broken South through Reconstruction. Look at the positive and the negative results by charting on a T-chart. positive Vocabulary: sharecropping Materials/Resources: equipment for competition, white paper, crayons negative The student demonstrates the understanding of the necessity of laws to protect ex-slaves after the Civil War by making a three part foldable of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments. Example of Foldable: Independent Practice: (Sinker) The student uses the flip-book in response as a prompt for the Question “Did the Civil War bring ex-slaves to full equality as Americans”? The student writes a response from the point of view of an ex-slave. Modifications/Extensions: Assignment length will vary based on the level of each student. How will you check for understanding?
