VP Debate
Thousands of people tuned into their tv's to watch a rather historic debate
between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden. Biden came in with much more experience
than Palin, but Sarah Palin held her own. After a disastrous interview with Katie
Couric, many Americans started to question McCain’s running mate choice, but
in the debate Sarah Palin did what she needed to do. In a way her answers
seemed very rehearsed and scripted, but she made strong points that
Republicans like to hear. For example she talked about not “waving the white flag
of truce,” when discussing the Iraq war. But a lot of the time she never answered
the question that was asked of her. Maybe she didn’t know the answers, but the
viewer could tell that she had a set list of things she needed to discuss and well
quite frankly she discussed them whether or not the moderator asked to hear
about them or not. Sarah Palin was chosen to relate to those families out there
who’s votes can swing either way and in the debate she did a good job trying to
play up her “soccer mom and Joe six pack” image. Palin has this energy per say
that people are drawn to and during the debate she was upbeat, smiley, and
actually shortened words like “going” to “goin” so in a way she sounded more like
the average American person, which was clever, but Biden had much more
succinct answers that actually answered the question. But I was wondering, did
people actually listen to Biden? So much of the night’s focus was on Sarah to
see whether she would slip up, so when she was able to hold her own, people
were rather shocked. Is Palin the best Vice Presidential choice? It is great for
women to see Sarah up there, but is it great to know that Sarah Palin can’t
actually name a newspaper she reads? When the next President and Vice
President get sworn in, they are diving into some of the worst times for America,
economically, internationally and is Palin ready? As Fareed Zakaria wrote in the
latest Newsweek, “ In these times, for John McCain to have chosen this person
to be his running mate is fundamentally irresponsible. McCain says that he
always puts country first. In this important case, it is simply not true.”
