Principal’s Message
Advent Reflection
“A voice of one crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord.” Luke 3:3-4
The world of power, pleasure, wealth, and honor is constantly shouting for our attention, but what is God saying? What
does God want? In order to hear clearly, we have to go to a silent and deserted place, a place where the diversions and
attachments are set aside. Advent is a kind of desert time for us because we’re preparing ourselves for the coming of
Christ. That is the reason we pray, fast and simplify our lives. That’s the challenge in our secular and busy world though.
The run-up to Christmas is a time of enormous distraction. We are challenged to prepare the way of the Lord and to
reform our lives. May we all take a few minutes to breathe, reach out to others and fix our eyes on God so that we grow
closer to Him.
Advent Season and Liturgies
Our Advent season began this week on Sunday, November 29 th. One way we are preparing our hearts and minds is by celebrating
Advent liturgies and Mass. Parents/guardians and families are always welcome to come worship with us!
Tuesday, Dec.1 –Liturgy was led by Gr. 3/4
Thursday, Dec. 10 –9:30 a.m. Mass led by Gr. 7/8
Tuesday, Dec. 15 – 12:45 p.m. Liturgy led by Gr. 2/3
CHRISTMAS CONCERT and BAKE SALE
St. Edward is excited to be hosting our Christmas Concert on Thursday, December 10 at our school. The bake sale, 50/50 draw, and
raffles, put on by our Catholic School Community Council, will begin at 6:00. The concert will begin at 6:30. Our Community
Council needs families to provide baking items for this night. All baking needs to be into the office by noon on Thursday, December
10. We look forward to seeing you all there!
Christmas Dinner
We will be having a Christmas Lunch in our gym on Wednesday, December 9 at noon for staff and students to gather as a school and
share a meal together. We will have to charge for our Christmas Dinner but are keeping the cost reasonable at $7.00 per person. We
will be having sausage, perogies, veggies and dessert. Financial support is available for families that may not be able to afford this
meal. Please let Mrs. Cratty know at (306) 659-7300.
THREE WAY CONFERENCES:
Thank you for your participation in the Three Way Conferences on November 26 and 27. The purpose of the conferences and the
review of the Student Portfolio format are to show student growth in their learning and allows for improved student and parent
engagement in the assessment for learning process for our students. “Assessment for Learning involves the use of information about
student progress to support and improve student learning, and to inform instructional practices” (GSCS Assessment Policy).
GOAL SETTING, REFLECTION and CLEARLY INDENTIFIED LEARNING OUTCOMES are important strategies to support
student learning. The opportunity to sit down with the students and their parents allows all the learning partners to authentically
participate in identifying LEARNING AND WORK HABIT GOALS. If you were unable to attend our conferences, please contact
your child(ren)’s teacher to arrange a meeting time.
BOOK FAIR
Dear parents and guardians of the St. Edward School Community – I would like to say thank you for all of your support for the book
fair. I truly love to read, and I am happy to share my love of reading with our students. “The more that you read, the more things you
will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” Dr. Seuss
Anna Thompson, Teacher-Librarian
Choir
Our school choir continues to practice from 12:20-12:40 on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the next month. We are excited to sing at
TCU for the Knights of Columbus Carol Festival. This will take place on Monday, December 7 at 7:00. Students are asked to wear
their Sunday best clothes. We will also be singing at a liturgy on December 15 at 12:45pm. If you have any questions, please contact
Mrs. Cratty or Miss Molnar.
Knights of Columbus Carol Festival
If you would like to attend the Knights of Columbus Carol Festival on Monday, December 7th we now have a limited amount of
tickets available at the office. Adult tickets are $10.00 each and a child’s ticket (12 & under) is $3.00. If your child is in our choir,
they do not need a ticket. Please see Mrs. Beuker if you would like to purchase tickets.
Christmas Dismissal
Our last day of classes prior to Christmas holidays is on Friday, December 18 th. Students will be dismissed early at 2:15
p.m. on this day. Please be sure to make arrangements for your child(ren).
DRESS FOR THE WEATHER
Students are reminded to wear clothing suitable and appropriate for the return of colder, wet and snowy weather. Students
are expected to go outdoors for fresh air and exercise even on cool days so please ensure students also have mitts and a warm
toque. We do ask that wet and dirty footwear are removed when coming into the school, so please have shoes at school that
students can wear indoors.
Parking and Dropping Off Students
We greatly appreciate that the majority of our parents/guardians safely drop their children off at school. Please keep the following in
mind when dropping off and picking up the students to ensure the utmost safety:
-Drop students off and pick them up on the school side of Avenue P as students dropped off on the other side of the street
tend to try to cross between traffic who are not expecting them to cross outside of the crosswalks
-Stop outside of the bus zones to avoid costly tickets from the traffic enforcement officers
-Please let the children out on the passenger side to avoid exposing them to traffic on the driver’s side
SRC – RUH TOY COLLECTION
The St. Edward SRC students would like your help collecting toys and money to be given to the pediatric unit at Royal University
Hospital. Items will be collected in classrooms and donated before Christmas. See the attached poster for more information.
Turn Markers Into Energy!
St. Edward School will be working with Crayola through a program called ColorCycle to send used markers to a facility that will
convert them into clean fuel. This will help provide energy for things like powering vehicles and heating homes and will help keep
markers out of our landfills. Each classroom will have a plastic container that will be used to collect any used markers (even nonCrayola brand). Thank you in advance for participating!
CSCC
There has been an extension to sell Blade tickets, so please keep selling. All forms & money are due Friday, Dec 4th.
Reminder our Bake Sale is fast approaching. We are asking each family to bake 1-2 dozen which can be brought to the school by
noon of Dec 10th. Proceeds from the sale will go towards our school as well as the paediatric ward to purchase new toys.
