Fellow Genners,
Many of you may recall my previous postings in
which the restoration
projects of several European cemeteries arranged
by the Heritage Foundation
for Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries throughout
Eastern Europe (HFPJC) were
announced, along with an appeal for addition info
which could benefit the
particular projects. Therefore, I take much
pleasure in informing you as to
the current positive status of those cemeteries.
In the future, however, I think it would be more
convenient for y'all if I
post a list of the cemeteries currently being
restored, along with a
one-liner describing its present status.
Of course, if anybody recognizes any of the towns
as their -or an
acquaintance's- ancestral hometown and has any
info which might benefit the
project, we'd very much appreciate if you could
contact our office, tel.
800-945-1552. E-mail: hfpjc@thejnet.com or
gen@jewishcemeterypreservation.org.
Thanks in Advance.
Following is a report of the cemeteries for which
restoration is currently
being
prepared/completed:
Budszentmihaly, Hungary
In the next few days, we will commence the building
of a cement barrier
(retainer wall) to
keep the eroding grounds "in check" in a dam-like
fashion. Subsequently, the
new fence will be erected.
Halmeu, Romania
The erection of the fence-followed by the
reconstruction of the Ohel and
toppled/broken tombstones-on the agenda for the
coming days.
Hernadnemeti, Hungary
Cemetery restored; (enclosure built, tombstones reerected, grounds cleared,
etc.)
Kisvarda, Hungary
One wall erected. 900 tombstones up righted.
Second and last wall currently
being completed.
Lusca, Romania(Interdam)
Sturdy new enclosure completed. Ohel and 350
headstones currently being
restored.
(See posting 5/6/04 Subject: Lusca & Valcau
Cemeteries)
Nagyhalasz, Hungary
The erection of a concrete, durable fence was
completed in June. Restoratio
n of cemetery proper (i.e. recement/up right
tombstones, clear grounds,
darken/rewrite illegible headstone texts) in process.
(see posting 4/29/04,
Subject: Discovered Two Cemeteries (Nagyhalasz)!)
Pezinok, Slovakia
Hundreds of fragmented tombstones painstakingly
gathered, recemented, and up
righted. As soon as the restoration of the interior
of the cemetery is
completed, a fence will be built to enclose the
unprotected areas of the
cemetery. (See posting 5/31/04 Subject: Positive
Developments-Restoration of
Pezinok Cemetery)
Szarvas, Hungary
An effective maintenance plan was negotiated
between the HFPJC and some
neighbors to ensure the long-time preservation of
the restored cemetery. In
addition, come September the use of a patch of
cemetery grounds for
planting will be halted.
Valcau, Romania
The erection of a concrete enclosure is on the
agenda for the coming
days/weeks.
Vasarosnameny, Hungary
100 headstones repaired and up righted. (Note: We
have individual photos of
most of the tombstones post restoration. We intend
to donate the info to the
JOWBR Template as soon as I get a chance to
transcribe them.)
Vonyhove, Ukraine
The fence is presently being erected, Im Yirtzeh
Hashem to be followed by
the restoration of the interior of the cemetery.
Of course, you can contact me at our office to see
if there are available
photos of your cemetery of interest.
Thank you very much for your cooperation and
assistance. As an extension to
this posting, I hope to post a list shortly of
cemeteries for which
restoration has been requested in the past couple of
months, some of which
are already in preparation for renovation.
So long,
Toby Mendlowitz
