REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION
1. A third party nominator of a site owned by a city or a county must provide a notice of nomination must be published
in a newspaper of general circulation in the city, town or county in which the property is located. Publication costs are
the responsibility of the nominator. An original copy of the notice and an affidavit of publication signed by the publisher
must be attached to this application.
2. A current photograph or slide of the property and any associated outbuildings and structures, a brief description of
the property, a brief statement of significance, and a current boundary description (legal description or lot and block
number) must be attached to this application.
Note: Private landowners will receive a copy of the State Archeological Landmark form for signature prior to
nomination.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING ARCHEOLIGCAL SITES
Archeological sites may be recognized as state archeological landmarks if any of the following criteria are met
(check appropriate boxes):

The site has the potential to contribute to a better understanding of the prehistory and/or history of
Texas by the addition of new and important information;

The site's archeological deposits and the artifacts within the site are preserved and intact, thereby
supporting the research potential or preservation interests of the site;

The site possesses unique or rare attributes concerning Texas prehistory and/or history;

The study of the site offers the opportunity to test theories and methods of preservation, thereby
contributing to new scientific knowledge;

The high likelihood that vandalism and relic collecting has occurred or could occur, and official landmark
designation is needed to ensure maximum legal protection, or alternatively, further investigations are needed
to mitigate the effects of vandalism and relic collecting when the site cannot be protected.

the committee's records as a State Archeological Landmark, it will thereafter be protected by, and its use governed by,
the Antiquities Code of Texas insofar as provided in that Code.
Furthermore, I understand that if the site is designated as a State Archeological Landmark, I will be provided with a
"Notice of Designation as a State Archeological Landmark," a copy of which will be filed by the Texas Historical
Commission with the county clerk in the county in which the site is located.
Furthermore, I understand that, in accordance with Section 191.097 of the Antiquities Code of Texas, the committee
may remove the designation of State Archeological Landmark from the site if it is determined that such designation is no
longer warranted.
