Cuba government is working to computerize several spheres of society such as
Health System, with the aim of improving the quality of medical services
provided to patients and facilitate the work of medical staff.
That’s why, the professors and students of the Medical Informatics Center of the
University of Informatics Sciences since 2006 develops a PACS-RIS product.
This project is responsible for developing applications and environments
dissimilar scopes that facilitate the storage, display and processing of medical
imaging and information management associated with the processes taking
place in the imaging departments of health institutions. These applications have
been installed and operated in various institutions in the country and also in
some institutions in Venezuela.
This article presents the main experiences of developing and deploy the
applications that formed part of the PACS-RIS product. It describes the main
difficulties encountered during development, related to the fulfillment of the
standard DICOM by medical equipment manufacturers and informatics
technology limitations. Also describe the alternatives adopted to correct the
deficiencies and the results obtained. It contains the main features of the
developed software solution, its impact on health in Cuba and Venezuela and
the acceptance by medical staff of the developed applications.
