COMMUNITY EDUCATION PARTNERSHIPS information presentations. Support for travel expenses, at 50% of cost, will be considered. Objectives 1. the strengthening of the links between the craft sector and the wider community 2. a recognition of craft as a valuable cultural asset and as a viable career opportunity 3. an increased appreciation for the skills of craft makers 4. the development of the audience for craft Materials costs will be the responsibility of the school. Eligibility The major target audience for this program is the K-12 school population. Other communitybased applications will be considered. Projects should be developed jointly by the craftsperson and the partnering school or community organization, and meet at least one of the Program’s objectives. Applications Applications should include: - a project description, to include an explanation of how Program objectives will be met - a schedule of activity, with projected dates and time periods - a balanced project budget, showing all pertinent expenses, as well as sources of funding other than the Community Education Program - resume and other materials describing the craftsperson or craftspeople involved; relevant background material on the school or community partner. Program Elements 1. Visiting Craftsperson Program. This program allows for the payment of a standard fee ($25 per hour to a maximum of 5 hours per day; limited to one day sessions) to a craftsperson working with Kindergarten – Grade XII students. Projects may include, but are not limited to demonstrations, workshops and career 2. Open Studio Program. This program allows for the use of a craftsperson’s studio by a school class or community group for the purposes of a demonstration or workshop. A standard fee ($25 per hour for the craftsperson to a maximum of 5 hours per day; $15 per hour for the use of the studio; limited to one day sessions) will be paid. Material costs will be the responsibility of the school or the community group. 3. Community Partnerships. This program allows for longer term projects that link the craftsperson with the wider community. Projects should meet the general objectives of the Community Education Program and strengthen the awareness of the value of craft to the community and the individual. As examples, projects might include a craftsperson in residence program, an exhibition of student work, craft demonstrations or preparation of materials to promote craft as a career. Normally, the maximum Craft Council contribution is $1,000 with a contribution from the partner which at least matches the Craft Council share. Final Report A final report must be submitted to the Craft Council Awards Committee within 2 months of the completion of the project, to include an outline of activities undertaken, copies of any materials generated for public distribution, a list of those participating and a financial report. Copies of any promotional materials, newspaper clippings and photographs of the project in progress would be appreciated. NEW CREATIONS FUND Objective: To provide support to craftspeople during the product development process. Eligibility: Both living expenses and project costs are eligible for support. New work must show a significant departure from existing products. Eligible work for this fund may be to supplement an existing product line, to form an exhibition for a gallery or other special display site, or to develop work for a specific marketplace. The Fund is open to application from craftspeople working in a production setting, or those creating one-of-a-kind pieces. Funds to a maximum of $2,500 per two year period per applicant may be awarded. Assessments will be based on the merit of the proposed work plan and the perceived viability of the project. Submission requirements: 1. A full description of the design work to be undertaken, including the applicant’s description of his or her future direction and an explanation of how this project will contribute to that direction and to the viability of the applicant’s craft business. The description may be written, although working drawings or other materials to help the jury understand the nature of the work to be undertaken would be helpful. 2. A planned work schedule, to include periodic objectives and timeline. 3. Two letters of reference from individuals who are familiar with the applicant’s work and can support the applicant’s ability to complete the work outlined in the written description. 4. A description of current and previous work and achievements; this should consist of both written and visual materials, and may include resume, portfolio, slides of photographs, brochures, price lists, catalogues, exhibition catalogues, articles and reviews, etc. All materials will be returned. 5. An approximate budget for living and project expenses to demonstrate how total anticipated income during the product development term (including the requested contribution of the New Creations Fund) will meet both living and project expenses. Terms Upon receipt of a signed contract, the Craft Council will issue the first instalment of 45% of the full amount. A second 45% instalment will be issued upon receipt of an interim report. Final payment will be released on receipt of a final report acceptable to the Awards Committee. STUDIO START-UP FUND Objective: to support the establishment of new, full-time craft studios by easing the transition from a learning situation to a production environment Eligibility: Applicants must: - be ready to establish a first, professional craft studio - have the intention of establishing themselves as full-time craft professionals working in independent studios - have acquired professional craft production skills - be at the beginning or in the early stages of studio establishment - have been resident in the province for a minimum of six months Criteria: 1. Quality of work, including design and technical ability. While it is recognized that applicants will be in the very early stages of a professional craft career, the jury will assess the potential of the products and product concept to meet the Craft Council’s Standards of Quality, and the ability of the applicant to develop a product range that is technically excellent and distinct to the maker. 2. The ability of the applicant to carry out the proposed workplan. 3. The intention of the applicant to participate in the craft industry on a professional basis following the period of support, and the perceived sustainability of the studio. 4. The quality of the application, including eligibility, inclusion of all required components and well-considered responses to the questions on the application form. Eligible Costs: The following costs are eligible for support under the Start-Up Fund: - Equipment to be used in the production of craft products (i.e. loom, kiln) - Materials to be used directly in the production of craft products (i.e. fabric, clay) - Workspace preparation. Materials and labour to construct or renovate a space which is to be used exclusively for craft production. (Not eligible: applicant’s own labour, operating costs.) - Rental Costs. The Awards jury will consider support of the cost to rent equipment or workspace. However, the applicant must demonstrate to the jury how production will be maintained after the financial support from the Start-up Fund expires. Submission Requirements: To apply for support from the Start-Up Fund, an applicant must submit the following: - A portfolio, which should contain: - a current cv - two letters of reference, one of which should be professional, and one of which may be personal. These letters should attest to the applicant’s ability to carry out the proposed workplan. Referees may be contacted for further information. - a minimum of four and a maximum of ten slides or photographs demonstrating the technical and design skills of the applicant. Each item should be described, giving the size of the object, the materials and techniques used and the date of completion. While actual samples of work would be welcome, such submissions may not always be practical. - A completed Start-Up Fund application form, with attachments as noted on the form. - Application deadline is the 15th of any month. It is recommended that application be made at least 4 weeks prior to intended project start. Maximum grant: 50% of eligible costs to a maximum grant of $5,000 per applicant. The jury reserves the right to offer less than the amount requested. Interview: The jury may find it necessary to conduct a personal interview with the applicant if information beyond that submitted is required. This may occur should the jury have insufficient funds to meet all eligible and worthy applicants. Studio Visit. The jury, or a representative, may find it necessary to make a studio visit at any stage during the process. Studio Closure. If the studio is disbanded within 12 months of last payment from the Start-Up Fund, any grant amount paid to the applicant from the Start-Up Fund will be deemed to be immediately repayable to the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador. Term: The approved workplan must be carried out within a 12 month period from date of approval. Final report must be submitted within 60 days of completion of work. Payment: Instalment payments may be made upon the applicant’s request, and upon submission of receipts covering expenditures made. Expenditures made before the date of approval will not be eligible for reimbursement. Payment of the final 20% of the amount approved will be dependent upon receipt of a satisfactory final report. Final Report The applicant will submit a final report at the end of the funded start-up period. This report will include: 1. A description of the studio, with photograph 2. A description of the product / product line with photographs or samples 3. A report of marketing activities undertaken and their results 4. A statement describing the value that the Start-Up grant has been to the applicant. 5. Financial report, including copies of receipts for any expenditures made and previously unclaimed. STUDY GRANTS Objective: to provide financial support to students undertaking full time, part time, short term or self-directed study in a craft field Program Elements: Study grants are available for: Full time, part time or short term study in a craft program at a recognized institution of applied art and design Educational field trips for students registered in a craft program at a recognized institution of applied art and design Participation in a short term workshop in a craft-related field (maximum $100) Self-directed study providing the applicant with a valuable learning experience Submission Requirements: Workshop participants may request a maximum contribution of $100 by completing the required application form. All other submissions require the following: 1. A detailed description of the planned learning experience 2. A statement of the expected benefits 3. A listing of applicable costs, which may include such things as travel, tuition, books and materials, and living expenses. List other sources of funding, whether assured, or for which application has been made. 4. Two letters of reference, one personal and one professional. Professional references may be sought from a previous instructor or from a craftsperson in a related field who is familiar with the applicant’s work. These referees may be contacted if further information is required. *Instead of references, field trip applications may include a single support letter from the program’s instructor. 5. A complete resumé, to include previous craft training and work experience. In particular, describe craft-related experience, whether as an employee, volunteer or self-employed craftsperson.* Instead of individual resumés, field trip applications may include a list of the students participating in the trip. 6. A portfolio demonstrating previous work, containing a minimum of four slides or photographs. Provide an information list, describing each item, and giving size, materials and techniques used, and the date of completion. While actual samples of work would be welcome, distance may make such submission impractical. *Field trip applicants may choose to submit a full resumé and portfolio or a written description of each student’s work, accomplishments and plans. 7. In addition, self-directed study applications must demonstrate that the experience will meet the expectations of the applicant. To address this point, applicants may include as appropriate, such things as credentials of instructor or mentor, research materials to be consulted, descriptions of equipment and materials to be used, etc. Study Award Values: The commitment of the applicant, the location of training, the length of the program and the quality of the application will be considered by the jury in determining the value of an award. Study awards may reach as high as $2,000 for a student travelling outside Canada to participate in graduate studies, while an award of $250 might be made to a student of a two-week summer program in Nova Scotia. Full time, in-province study awards will not exceed $500. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Applicants must have been resident in the province for at least 6 months prior to application. An applicant is not eligible for a second study award for the same program in the same year. Funds from these programs may not be used to complement other funding from the Craft Industry Development Program for the project in question. Costs incurred prior to the date of receipt of application will not be eligible for reimbursement. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA Consideration of applications will be based on the quality of the applicant’s work (based on both technique and design, the assessed potential of the student to complete the proscribed course of work or study, and the applicant’s expected participation in and contribution to the provincial craft industry. Evaluation will be made in relation to the expected level of achievement based on an applicant’s previous study and experience. Incomplete submissions may not be considered. DEADLINES The Craft Council Awards Committee meets monthly to consider requests for support. Applications for any monthly meeting must be postmarked by the 15th of the previous month. Applications should be submitted at least 4 weeks prior to start of a project. Proof of registration or travel, or a signed contract, will be required before funds are issued.
