MATERIALS:


Epoprostenol (Flolan)
Sterile Diluent for Flolan
Empty 150 mL viaflex bag
0.5mg (500,000ng) or 1.5 mg (1,500,000ng) vials
2 x 50 mL / vial = 100 mL
CALCULATIONS:
Step 1: Confirm rate ordered for epoprostenol ______ng/kg/min. Rate may be a range but can determine stable rate. (A)
Step 2: Confirm patient’s actual body weight _______kg (B)
Step 3: Calculate dose per hour (A) _____ ng/kg/min x 60 minutes x (B) ______kg= ______ng/hr (C)
Step 4: Multiply ( C ) _____ ng/hr x 8 hours to calculate quantity needed in each bag ______ng/bag (D)
Step 5: Divide (D) ______ ng/bag by 100 mL = Dilution necessary _______ng/mL in bag (E)

PROCEDURE:
Reconstitution and Dilution Instructions
Step 1: Final concentration bag required from above
Step 2: Vial size selected (circle one)

Step 3: Dissolve contents of one vial with 5 mL of STERILE DILUENT for FLOLAN. Label vial with final concentration.
100,000 nanograms /mL for 0.5 mg vial
OR
300,000 nanograms /mL for 1.5 mg vial
Step 4:

For 3000ng/mL bag dilution, withdraw 3 mL of 100,000 nanog/mL solution OR 1 mL of 300,000 nanog/mL
solution and add sufficient STERILE DILUENT for FLOLAN to make a total of 100 mL in a150 mL viaflex bag.

For 5000ng/mL bag dilution, withdraw 5 mL of 100,000 nanog/mL solution OR 1.7 mL of 300,000 nanog/mL
solution and add sufficient STERILE DILUENT for FLOLAN to make a total of 100 mL in a150 mL viaflex bag.

For 10,000ng/mL bag dilution withdraw 3.3 mL of 300,000 nanog/mL solution and add sufficient STERILE
DILUENT for FLOLAN to make a total of 100 mL in a 150 mL viaflex bag.

For 15,000ng/mL bag dilution, withdraw 5 mL of 300,000 nanog/mL solution and add sufficient STERILE
DILUENT for FLOLAN to make a total of 100 ml in a150 mL viaflex bag.

For 30,000ng/mL bag dilution, withdraw 10 mL of 300,000 nanog/mL solution (requires 2 vials) and add
sufficient STERILE DILUENT for FLOLAN to make a total of 100 ml in a150 mL viaflex bag.
