第1讲
主讲人:Professor Jan Nuyts
题 目:On the relationship between cognitive linguistics and functional linguistics
时 间:6 月 5 日,周四,下午 1:30-3:00
地 点:对外经济贸易大学,诚信楼 1412
内容简介:
On the relationship between cognitive linguistics and functional linguistics
Jan Nuyts (University of Antwerp, Belgium)
Abstract:
This talk aims to explore some aspects of the relationship between two major strands
in current linguistics, viz. cognitive linguistics and functional linguistics. The
talk consists of two parts: The first part will offer a general overview and a
comparison of the most important features and properties of cognitive linguistics
and functional linguistics, in an attempt to get to a better understanding of what
both strands share and how they differ.
The second part will be devoted to a more detailed analysis of one specific but very
crucial issue which appears to divide the two strands, more than anything else, viz.
the question of the difference between a constructionist approach to grammar, common
in cognitive linguistics, and what may be called a processual approach to grammar,
common in functional linguistics.

内容简介:
Tense-Aspect-Modality in language and conceptualization: a cognitive-functional
perspective
Jan Nuyts (University of Antwerp, Belgium)
Abstract:
This talk will have both an empirical and a theoretical goal.
The empirical goal is to inquire into the structure and organization of the system
of ‘tense-aspect-modality marking’ in language. What are the categories
constituting this system? how are they organized? what are the principles behind
the system? etc. I will be dealing in fairly general terms with the system as a whole,
and I will be dealing in some more detail with problems in one subdomain of the system,
viz. the semantic categories traditionally covered under the label ‘modality’,
and some related categories. At the theoretical level, I will be dealing with issues
pertaining to the organization of the cognitive systems involved in language use,
including, most notably, the question of the relations between the system for
language processing per se, and the conceptual system, i.e. the system responsible
for storing and processing our knowledge of the world – or in other words, with
the language and thought issue. In this regards, I will specifically argue for what
I call a cognitive-functional approach, i.e. an approach which steers a midway
between traditional functional approaches and the more recent cognitive linguistic
approach in current linguistics.
