Health Background:
About half the revenue for health expenditure in Palestinian territories has come
from donors. There are shortages of medical specialists, nurses, midwives and
public health specialists.
The separation of health-care delivery between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank,
and Israel’s control of all movement, complicate the ability of the Ministry of
Health to coordinate its activities, often leading to duplication and loss of
efficiency.
In October 2007 access to health services was severely restricted in the West Bank,
but services were preserved in the Gaza Strip. Between December and February
2007, after the strike, hospital and primary health care services returned to normal
levels, but equipment problems and shortages continued.

Project Urgency:
The need for these machines has become absolutely vital as more and more people
are being hurt and attacked during the prolonged siege of the Gaza strip. The
number of patients requiring specific urgent medical assistance in the form of
blood filtering has increased considerably over the last few months. The current
number of patients is 430, however it looks at the current rate, this may increase by
50-60 cases a year.
In Gaza there are approx. 430 patients, with each one requiring the cleaning of
their blood 3 times every week. Therefore in one month the dialysis machine may
be used up to 5160 times, making it a vital resource.
Dialysis machines
The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste products from the blood. Dialysis is
a procedure that is a substitute for many of the normal duties of the kidneys.
Another major duty of the kidney is to remove the waste products that the body
produces throughout the day.

Dialysis is primarily used to provide an artificial replacement for lost kidney
function (renal replacement therapy) due to renal failure. Dialysis may be used for
very sick patients who have suddenly but temporarily, lost their kidney function
(acute renal failure) or for quite stable patients who have permanently lost their
kidney function (stage 5 chronic kidney disease).
The urgency for these machines is quite evident. For example the prognosis of
patients with chronic kidney disease has shown that all cause mortality (the overall
death rate) increases as kidney function decreases (Perazella, 2006).
Most patients using dialysis due to kidney impairment or failure urgently require a
dialysis machine at a special dialysis clinic. Most sessions can take up to four
hours, and typically patients visit the hospital one to three times per week.

Project Duration:
The duration of this project is for life of the machine beginning approx.
1-2 weeks after approval has been granted from the donor.
Project Location:
HAI plan to provide 5 dialysis machines in
three prominent hospitals in the Gaza strip
area, one hospital in Rafah (south Gaza
strip) and one hospital in Khan Younis
(South Gaza strip).
These areas represent approx. 60% of the
population of all the Gaza Strip, which has
a total population of approx. 1.6 million.
