WELCOME TO İZMİR...WELCOME TO FACULTY OF ENGINEERING
Dear friends,
Learning for the individual in particular and education of the society in general are dynamically
evolving and universal processes that are vitally necessary for the continual existence and
development of mankind. During its lifetime of 35 years, our Faculty of Engineering has
constantly renewed itself by learning progressively and has been continuing to improve by
enriching through new reforms on educational, philosophical and cultural aspects. Today, our
Faculty has become an educational and research institution of quantitatively and qualitatively
high standards boasting 14,500 alumni, 203 faculty members and lecturers with Ph.D. degrees,
226 research assistants, 127 administrative personnel and 4,100 undergraduate students.
Having faculty members with Ph.D. degrees 26% of which from universities in North America
and Europe, 46% from Dokuz Eylül University, and the remaining 28% from other national
universities, Dokuz Eylül University (DEU) Faculty of Engineering has always closely monitored
the universal and local changes, the varying needs of the society and industry, the innovations in
sciences of education and engineering and thus, it has been able to adapt itself in accordance
with new demands and developments.
Offering undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degree programs in 11 different engineering
disciplines, our Faculty interacts locally by organizing seminars, courses, panels and project
competitions on subjects concerning the society, industry, local governments and high school
students and by producing joint projects with local public and private organizations.
Our Faculty serves on the national level by educating students coming from all around the
country as enterprising, creative and proficient engineers well equipped with the necessary
knowledge and skills to contribute to their community, by scientifically training the doctoral
degree candidates coming from less developed universities of the country as scientists bent on
performing scientific research, by carrying out joint projects with other national institutions, and
by being at the forefront of a mentality advocating reformism, creativity and entrepreneurship.
Conscious of the resources and problems of the Aegean Region and the whole country and with
an identity eager to cope with and find solutions to the problems of the society, DEU Faculty of
Engineering has been organizing numerous events. With the purpose of providing a scientific
and innovative motivation for pre-college education, the first Inter High School Science and
Engineering Project Competition was held in 2004. The same year, our Faculty of Engineering
hosted the First National Engineering Congress and the 8th Meeting of the Council of Deans of
the Engineering Faculties which brought together engineers and the deans of all the Engineering
Faculties to share their common problems, projects and experiences on education, scientific
research and administration.
Aware of the ubiquity and pervasiveness of research and education worldwide, our Faculty of
Engineering set itself goals of universal dimensions and conducted its international relations
within the framework of mutual help, sharing of information and experience, and cultural,
philosophical and scientific exchanges. We have been targeting publication of 1 journal article
per faculty member each year in journals included within the Science Citation Index (SCI),
doubling our current average of 0.5 journal article per faculty member. In terms of the local,
national, and international (carried out jointly especially with researchers from European
1
countries) research projects, we reached the current rate of 0.7 projects per faculty member
each year. Being among the first examples in the world, 4 of our Departments adopted the socalled “active learning” system which values teamwork and the integration of information and
places the student at the center of the learning process. Our Faculty of Engineering maintained
its reformist spirit on education by placing the issue of educational quality on top of its agenda.
Following careful self-assessment, our Departments made their undergraduate programs
available for critical appraisal of the Engineering Evaluation Committee and thus, they entered a
new phase on the way to perfection in engineering education.
To experience the joy of learning together with students from the universities in Europe, to add
extra dimensions to our European qualities in modernity, science, technology, thought, culture
and arts and to integrate in universality, to excel by mutually transferring our knowledge and
experiences, we invite the estimable students of the European universities to add new colors to
our educational institution which is situated in İzmir, an Aegean city bedecked with historical
treasures and famous for its mild climate.

Industrial, Geological and Textile Engineering branches were founded.
In 1978, the Faculty began to accept students in the departments of Civil Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering and Textile Engineering as well as Earth Sciences and Chemistry
up to 1982. The department of Earth Sciences was then merged with the departments of
Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Architecture to form the Faculty of
Engineering and Architecture within the recently founded Dokuz Eylül University in 1982. On
those years, the Faculty consisted of Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering,
Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Architecture, City and Environmental Planning.
In 1992, the Faculty of Architecture has separated and the Faculty has been renamed as the
Faculty of Engineering .With the establishment of Computer Engineering, Geophysical
Engineering, Textile Engineering, Metallurgy and Material Engineering Departments, it has
broadened its perspective and has reached to a faculty of 11 departments.
Since the 1992-1993 academic year, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Geological Engineering
departments have started Secondary Education. But today Secondary Education is only held
in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering departments. Since the beginning of the
2002-2003 academic year, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Geophysical Engineering
and Geological Engineering have adapted the Problem Based Learning system. In 20032004 academic year, the department of Mining Engineering has started Problem Based
Learning system and other departments are expected to follow the line.
Today, the departments of Industrial Engineering1, Computer Engineering2, Geological

(2005).
Examination and Assessment
Relative evaluation system is implemented at the Faculty of Engineering. Accordingly, two
midterms and one final examination are generally given for each course in theoretical and/or
practical form (unless otherwise indicated in the course description). The student is not
allowed to take a final examination unless he/she:


Attends 70 % of the lectures/taught courses,
Attends 80 % of the practical and successfully completes within the required period of
time the relevant course activities such as field practices, laboratory work, projects,
presentations, (workshop activities), apprenticeships, home assignments, etc.
7
Final points are calculated as sum of 50% of final exam’s point and 50% of average points of
midterm exams. The minimum requirement for successful completion of a course is 60 out of
100. There is no make-up exam for failed course(s). The grading scale is as follows:

Grades Not Included in the Grade Point Average
Y: Failed
B: Passed
Temporary Grades
D: Incomplete Attendance – Must repeat the course
E: Incomplete – Must complete the requirements to get a grade otherwise it converts into
FF.
Diploma Grade
Diploma Grade is calculated by multiplying the credits (weekly hours) of each course with
points obtained at these courses. The results of each are added and then divided by the
sum of credits.
For a student to graduate and receive a diploma, his/her Grade Point Average (GPA)
should be at least 2.00 out of 4.00. Moreover, students with GPA between 3.50 and
upper are on the Dean’s Honor List.
Active Learning System
Dokuz Eylül University, which has celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, is known with its
“active learning system”. This system, which has initially been developed at the Faculty of
Medicine for the first time in Turkey, is applied by the Faculty of Engineering as well.
Accordingly, some departments of the Faculty of Engineering has already adopted the
“active learning system”, which is also known as “problem-based learning system”. Thus,
consisting mainly of modules rather than ordinary lectures, education is based on problemsolving and case-related projects. In this context, the term “module” corresponds to the
problem-based learning sessions, presentations based on theoretical and practical issues,
laboratory applications, field studies and project applications where engineering skills are
developed, and other relevant activities including orientation, discussion, consultation,
measuring and assessment. On the other hand, the term “lecture” is used for courses such
as Turkish Language, Atatürk Principles, Sports, Fine Arts and other courses to be
established by the Faculty Board.
8
Assessment procedures are similar to those applied in classical higher education system.
However, besides the results of the examinations to be held on the last day of the module,
knowledge, critical comments, laboratory work, vocational skills, and communication skills
performed by the student throughout the problem-based learning sessions are also taken
into account during the assessments. End-term exams take place at the end of Fall and
Spring Semesters.
The course credits of the departments that apply active learning system are computed
slightly differently from the ones that apply classical learning system. In the following module
descriptions, the total credit hours of the modules are calculated as the summation of
theoretical module hours plus one half of practical module hours.
Examination and Assessment
“In-semester” grade is calculated over 100 by multiplying the credits and raw grades and
dividing the result to the total number of credits in that semester. Adding the 30% of the endterm exam result to the 70% of the in-semester grade, the “semester grade” is calculated. A
total of 50% of each semester’s grades forms the “class grade”. Students whose class
grades are higher than 70 are exempted from end-of-the-year exam of the relevant module.
Students with grades below 50 are unsuccessful and should take the same module once
more. 50% of the end-of-the–year exam results and 50% of the class grade are added
together in order to calculate the “final class grade”. Final class grade should be at least 70
over 100 for successful completion of the class.
The Faculty of Engineering applies conditional grading system, for which the equivalent
grades due to relative grading system are given as follows:
Conditional Grading
Relative Grading
100
4.00
85
3.50
80
3.00
75
2.50
70
2.00
65
1.50
60
1.00
50
0.50
All intermediate values are calculated by linear interpolation.
Diploma Grade
Diploma grade, which is also known as “weighed average” is calculated by dividing the
grade found by multiplication of grades of each modules with the number of their respective
credits, to the total number of credits. Diploma grade is calculated over 4, and students
having obtained 3.50 average are entitled to the honor list, receiving a document certifying
this success.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the important directions of software engineering and
computer science. Components and approaches of artificial intelligence are incorporated in
most
of
the
complex
applied
computer
systems.
The main goal of the AI laboratory is to bridge the gap between scientific research and
17
industrial applications for such socially important areas as medicine, economy, and industrial
engineering.

Professional and Academic Meetings
1.ADVIS(Advances in Information Systems) : The conference is to be held to honour
the late Professor Esen Ozkarahan (1940 1999) and his outstanding contributions to
databases and information systems. It is a biannual conference organised since 2000 that is
held in a beautiful Aegean city, Izmir, that is in close proximity to many archaeological sites.
Aim and Scope:
Information Systems are rapidly evolving and involve a broad range of technologies
such as IS development, Databases, Workflow management, Information Retrieval,
Networks, Decision Support, and Knowledge Discovery, and others. ADVIS aims at bringing
together researchers in different fields of Information Systems who have a common interest
in interdisciplinary research. The Conference provides a forum for the presentation and
exchange of current research results, original IS applications as well as bridging research
and development in various fields of Information Systems
Web address: http://www.deu.edu.tr/advis
2.NITE(New Information Technologies in Education) : The workshop is organized
parallel to the International Conference “Advances in Information Systems” since 2000 and
focuses on New Information Technologies suitable for new methods of education, in
particular Active Learning.
Aim and Scope:
Active learning has proven to be an effective method for increasing student learning,
developing interdisciplinary lessons, and increasing student responsibility and initiative for
learning. Examples of active learning strategies include inquiry learning, problem-based
learning, experiential learning, and cooperative learning. The workshop emphasizes the
development of pedagogically sound active learning tactics for partial and complete online
courses. There is no “one size fits all” strategy for active learning. That is why collaboration
and discussion of different approaches and achievements is important for future success in
this area.
We are soliciting papers presenting original methodological results, demonstrations,
and case studies in the topics listed below. If you are a novice in this area, you will be able to
learn the main concepts and see examples of active learning. If you have experience in the
area, you will be able to discuss research results and online tactics for implementing active
learning with other presenters.

Job Opportunities
Industrial engineering is a branch of science that connects engineering and management
sciences together. Therefore it owns much more opportunities and flexibilities than other
branches of engineering. In today’s world industrial engineers take roles in traditional
manufacturing environments, finance corporations, consultancy firms as well as airlines or
hospitals.
Industrial Engineering Society (IES)
Dokuz Eylul University Industrial Engineering Society is a student organization founded in
1997. The main goals of the society are to introduce the department to employers, to
organize seminars and technical visits to the companies and to improve the communication
between students and employers.
In addition, IES represents Dokuz Eylül University in the Meeting of Industrial Engineering
Studens in Turkey. IES organized two meetings in 1999 and 2002. About 350 students from
20 universities attended to these meetings.
Laboratories
Teaching labs include Human Factors lab., Robotics and Automation lab.and Personal
Computer labs.

EDUCATION
Geophysical engineering department has been started Problem Based Learning (PBL) since
2002. Problem Based Learning is a curriculum development and delivery system that
recognizes the need to develop problem solving skills as well as the necessity of helping
students to acquire necessary knowledge and skills. PBL utilizes real world problems, not
hypothetical case studies with neat, convergent outcomes. It is in the process of struggling
with actual problems that students learn both content and critical thinking skills.
There is foreign language preparation class. After foreign language preparation class, our
students continue programme which contains main engineering and geophysical modules
their 1st year. At the end of the each module, students complete their technical trainees.
Students completes technical trainee during 15 days in summer period after 3nd year. Master,
Master Adaptation and Doctorate programmes were opened in the framework of Institute of
Natural and Applied Sciences (http://www.fbe.deu.edu.tr). At present, 15 MSc and 12 PhD
students are continuing their education in the department.

ACTIVITIES
Job Opportunities
Mining and the extraction of minerals are one of the oldest industries in the history of human
civilization. And with its reliance on state-of-the-art technology and a strong emphasis on the
environment, mining and minerals engineering is also one of the most progressive industries
today. Mining provides the raw materials and energy resources needed to sustain modern
civilization. The mining curriculum combines basic engineering subjects, topics in geology
and essential courses in mining to prepare graduates to discover, evaluate and develop
mineral deposits. Graduates of this program design, operate, manage, and reclaim mines
and mining facilities in a profitable, safe, and environmentally responsible manner. A career
in mining engineering requires a strong background in mathematics, computer applications,
economics, communication skills, and physical sciences, particularly geology, physics, and
chemistry.
Graduates of our department can easily find job vacancies in governmental associations
such as MTA (Mineral Research & Exploration), Eti Holding, Turkish Iron & Steel Enterprises,
Turkish Coal Enterprises and Karadeniz Copper Enterprises. They can also conduct their
career individually or in private sector in a broad range of applications including open pit and
underground mine planning, drilling studies, marble and natural stone production, extraction
of industrial minerals especially for cement raw material and construction purposes, tunnel
and dam excavation, soil and rock mechanics analyses, mining and beneficiation of metals,
sales and marketing engineers in raw materials and mine machinery.
