Placement:
Academic
Clinical Supervisor:
Respiratory Medicine: Dr Stephen Fowler
Obs and Gynae: Dr Pierre Martin-Hirsch
Medical Education: Dr Kamran Khan
Outline of duties
These academic foundation posts are supervised by three academic consultants with
active research links to the nearby Universities of Central Lancashire, Lancaster and
Manchester . The academic posts are linked to two posts in Medicine and one in
Obstetrics and Gynaecology. There are several on-going research programmes
available to the successful candidates. The three mentors will supervise the junior
doctors during the four-month dedicated research period. It is hoped to have projects
that will run for over a year so that meaningful data can be obtained and papers
published.
The Medical Education placement will have the scope to incorporate 1 or 2 sessions
within the Anaesthetic department.
The academic foundation candidates will receive a good grounding in research
methodologies and we aim for them to have submitted papers in peer reviewed journals
and / or for presentation at national / international meetings by the end of the F2 track.
The four-month period dedicated to the academic element of the track will enable the
Foundation doctor to dedicate themselves to their research project. Although working
independently the F2 will be closely supervised and well supported by their Educational
Supervisor and will continue to attend the monthly F2 organised teaching programme
Placement:
Clinical Supervisor:
Medicine (Respiratory and Acute)
Dr Hasan
Outline of duties
The trainee undertaking the academic working in Respiritory Medicine & Medical
education will complete their clinical work within this Medicine placement.
The division of general medicine serves a population of 350,000. The general medical
firms have sub specialty interest including gastroenterology, respiratory medicine,
endocrinology, DMFE and renal medicine. The trainees are attached to acute firms,
which perform unselected general medical takes of around 40 patients. They have
supervision during on calls by the SpR who has no other commitments during his/her on
call day. There are also twice daily consultant ward rounds, which add a significant
educational remit to the acute take.
The F2 trainees will attend respiratory / general medical clinics seeing both new and
follow up patients under consultant supervision. They will have day to day
responsibilities for managing in-patients with their firms. There will be consultant led
ward rounds twice a week
Trainees will be expected to participate in educational activities of the department,
including grand rounds, MDT and research meetings and to perform an audit.
Competencies gained will include communication skills, multidisciplinary team-working
skills, assessment and management of a vast range of medical elective and emergency
conditions, data interpretation, and time management and prioritisation skills. There are
protected teaching sessions for foundation year programme trainees.
The job is EWTD compliant.
Placement:
Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Clinical Supervisor:
Mr Pierre Martin -Hirsch
Outline of duties
The Obstetric and Gynaecology Department is one of the largest in the North West
Region. It has over 4,000 deliveries and a purpose built unit on the main site. It
provides neonatal and obstetrics support and back up for our neighbouring units. In
addition, we are the regional cancer centre. We provide a full spectrum of specialist
clinics in obstetrics including maternal high risk, diabetes, endocrine and neurological
diseases. In gynaecology, we have specialist clinics in gynaecological oncology,
infertility, urodynamics and colposcopy. Each foundation post is allocated to a particular
consultant and should gain them broad based experience as well as attending specialist
clinics. They would also be supported by the nominated registrar of that team. Training
would include communication skills, assessment of acutely ill patients and initial
management and treatment of both gynaecological and obstetric emergencies. They
would gain regular surgical experience in theatre and post operative management. They
would need to liaise closely with community based teams and the midwifery service.
There is also an active audit programme in addition to their F2 training day. There are
three F2 posts as part of a 1 in 10 rota reflecting a spectrum of G.P. trainees and career
Obstetricians/Gynaecologists. They would work a partial shift system, which is well
within the European Working Time Directive and they would be able to take their full
study leave entitlement if required.
Placement:
General Practice
Clinical supervisor:
GP Trainer
This is a formal attachment to one of our local training practices. The post covers all aspects
of Primary Care work. There is regular exposure to patients with face to face consultations
on clinical matters. In addition, the F2 gains competencies such as organisational skills, and
multi-disciplinary team working in primary care.
The F2 attends and contributes to Practice meetings and gains an overview of the
management organisation in General Practice.
This post includes work with Primary Care Trusts as well as liaising with Hospital Trusts
when required.
There is currently no provision of Out of Hours and this is not a requirement for these posts.
All of our GP posts are within Training Practices so there is AV equipment available to use to
support training in Consultation skills. Many of the Practices already have experience of
training GP Registrars.
The F2 doctors receive guidance and training form the Practice management team along
with other clinicians such as Nurse Practitioners. There is also the opportunity to gain
exposure to GPs working with speciality interests by working with other Partners within the
Practices.
We encourage regular feedback from the practices on the progress of the F2 doctors and
support is still available centrally from the Postgraduate Team.
Study leave is supported where appropriate.
The protected teaching programme occurs for one whole day once a month where F2s in
GP will return to the Trust to be tutored with the rest of their F2 colleagues.
