WOOD CREEK ONE NEWSLETTER MAY 2009 Antifreeze Poisoning of Animals - Antifreeze poisoning of animals, in particular, dogs and cats, is a very common, but preventable occurrence. A few simple precautions can prevent the tragic death of an animal. Ethylene glycol, the active component in antifreeze, has a sweet smell that attracts animals. Animals will drink antifreeze that has leaked from a radiator, or spilled in a garage or storage room. Unbelievably, some people will use a mixture of antifreeze and meat as a trap for animals. The intentional poisoning of an animal in this manner is a crime, and punishable by incarceration. The ingestion of antifreeze will cause renal failure in the animal. In other words, the kidneys will cease to function and ultimately lead to the animal’s death. The symptoms of antifreeze poisoning are: a disoriented, or drunk-like behavior, lethargy, convulsions, and coma. If you suspect that an animal has ingested antifreeze, immediate treatment by a veterinarian is critical. Proper treatment within a few hours of ingestion can save the animal’s life. However, simple precautions can prevent this tragic event. Keep radiators in proper working order and repair all leaks. Clean antifreeze spills from driveways, garage floors, and storage rooms as soon as you notice them. Keep antifreeze, and other potential poisons, in a closed and secure location. Thank you all for paying your assessment fees this year. Before the printing of this newsletter, we received all assessment fees for 2009. This may be a record for at least the last five or six years. Woo Hoo! Thank you all for taking the time to mail in your fees, especially folks that did it early, because it saves Wood Creek expenses for stamps, envelopes, labels, and a great deal of time and effort to process late fee letters and make phone calls. They have two boys, 9 and 7 years old, Lisa enjoys barrel racing and James enjoys softball. Please take a minute to say “Howdy.” Myrtle Olbrych informed the board recently there is a new garbage service available to those of us who might want to switch. The new service is TNT Garbage. Their contact person is Mika and his number is 936-597-6362. Myrtle reported the fee is $99.32 per quarter, they provide a 96 gallon trash container and they pick up on Mondays and Thursdays. Send any news to the community email address listed above or to Victor Love at victorwlove@consolidated.net. County Commissioner. If you could take the time to call or drop Mr. Meador a thank you for all the county does for our neighborhood, it may help him continue to be responsive in the future: 936-539-7815; (bhouser@co.montgomery.tx.us). Improvements. Any improvements must be approved before being started. Please forward two copies of the desired project to David Scott (Chairman of the Building Committee), along with enough detail to include dimensions among structures, lot lines and the proposed improvements, as well as a description of the project and how it will be used. The more detail included the better. While it may be clear to a property owner their intentions, it is sometimes difficult to understand when the plans submitted do not have sufficient detail. The board does not want to impede the progress of any improvements, but does want to ensure adherence to the deed restrictions. Open-Top Trash Container. Another container will be brought to our neighborhood on May 22nd and picked up approximately four weeks later or earlier if it is filled. Please take time to place your trash as far toward the front and in the most compact manner possible, making sure nothing is above the top of the container. Also, please do not place the following items in the container: 1) no food or animal waste; 2) no tires, paint or batteries. Please be advised: There is a place to take household chemical waste in Montgomery County. Please call 281-367-7283 for more details. Automotive fluids, cleaners, solvents, paint, pool chemicals and pesticides are just some of the many items accepted. Front Entrance Improvement. The Board entertained two bids for improving the entrance to include low- or no-maintenance plants and some rock borders. Implementation of the improvement will likely begin within the next few weeks. Savingwater.org says, "Soaker hoses help you save. Sprinklers waste water on overspray, runoff and evaporation. But by allowing water to seep directly into the soil, soaker hoses put water exactly where your plants need it-at the roots.” Board Members Quarterly Board Meeting.
