Job Purpose
Direct responsibility for the strategic development of the basketball programme within the
University, delivering sessions, implementing coaching structures, selecting squads and
coordinating other relevant support services.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To plan performance programmes for all squads across GUBC (both men’s and
women’s sections), including training schedules, competition programmes and long term
planning
2. Delivery of club training sessions and match day coaching responsibilities with the
GUBC Men’s 1st team.
3. To represent the University Basketball Programme, providing advocacy and active
recruitment, attracting the best prospective student athletes to the University.
4. Overall responsibility for the long-term planning for coach provision, including a coach
education programme to attract, train and retain coaches from club membership and the
wider basketball community.
5. Responsible for mentoring support to all coaches involved with the basketball
programme, providing appropriate support mechanisms to allow coaches to achieve their
potential.
6. Responsible for the monitoring and evaluation of the programme, working with the Club
Sport Manager, identifying new initiatives and programme elements to maintain a
professional and progressive basketball programme.
7. To play a role in the development and delivery of innovative performance and wider
service development projects, identifying initiatives that add value to the student
experience and/or service effectiveness
8. To work effectively with others in the SRS, particularly with others in the service
development area e.g. to provide administration to the basketball programme and utilise
expertise available in areas such as strength and conditioning; working with the SDT
(Recreational Sport) to ensure a relevant basketball development pathway is achieved
9. To maintain and develop appropriate professional knowledge of current local, national
and international issues related to basketball and to represent the University’s interests
at national, regional and local meetings and conferences
10. Establish, maintain and develop links with key internal and external departments and
organisations that will enable added value and enhance the quality of the SRS’ service
provision and programme e.g. Internal – Recruitment and International Office, exercise
science and medical related departments. External – Winning Students, Scottish Student
Sport, sportscotland, Institute of Sport, Scottish basketball clubs

Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
 HND, VQ 3/4, Higher Grades or equivalent
 UKCC level 2 Basketball (or equivalent)
 Current First Aid Qualification or ability to gain accredited status prior to post
commencing
 Extensive knowledge and understanding of the organisation & structure of British /
Scottish Student Sport, including competition programming, opportunities and
structural organisation.
 In-depth knowledge and understanding of the organisation and structure of British &
Scottish Basketball
Desirable:
 Educated to a degree level
 UKCC Level 3 Basketball (or equivalent)
 UKCC Level 2 Strength and Conditioning (or equivalent)
 Knowledge of current trends in sport/ performance sport sector
 Full clean driving licence

Experience
Essential:
 4 years’ relevant experience in basketball or other sport environment with
qualifications or evidence of progression and development gained through 5-6 years’
relevant work experience.
 Demonstrable experience of managing a team of volunteer coaches
 Demonstrable experience of devising, monitoring and reviewing basketball
development plans
 Track record of working effectively with partners
 Experience of effective management of budgets
 Experience of partnership development and delivery
Desirable:
 Competed or coached at international level
 Experience of working in a university sporting environment





Dimensions
Member of the club sport team which manages the weekly activity of over 3,400
students across 48 sports clubs.
Manage all volunteer and paid support staff, numbering up to 10 individuals and their
coach and performance pathway.
The post holder is the designated point of contact at the University for current and
prospective athletes looking to join the basketball programme.
Responsible, with the other senior managers, for a consumable / operational spend
of £20k per annum
Responsible for the management of the basketball programme – this includes all
aspects of athletes technical, physical and psychological development.
Job Features
Planning and Organising

The post holder is responsible for the planning of training schedules, programmes
and competition schedules on an annual basis. This will include weekly training
programmes, the setting and rationalisation of Key Performance Indicators and
oversee recruitment trips.
 To manage coaches, both voluntary and paid, providing strategic and performance
led objectives for individual members and specific teams. This includes the workload
planning with volunteer and assistant coaches ensuring objective setting and
priorities are established annually.
 To organise pre-season training camps in the lead up to the academic year, as well
as providing objective based training programmes for vacation periods.
 Work closely with Service Development Teams (recreation) to plan an annual
recreational basketball programme, open to all university students.
 Plan competition programme and itinerary, ensuring a varied programme that
provides opportunities across all levels of the club.
Decision Making

Overall decision maker in the coaching and training of all GUBC student members
and coaches.
 Have the ability to prioritise the use of facilities, both court and gym based, ensuring
a platform is available for all student members and coaches to reach their potential.
 Assess the viability and strategic relevance of development opportunities and
initiatives associated with basketball.
Internal/External Relationships

Extensive internal and external relations due to the nature of the role. This will
include working alongside the key national governing bodies (e.g. sportscotland) and
key sport governing bodies, specifically Scottish Basketball, at Chief Executive and
Performance Manager levels, developing partnerships to enhance opportunities
available to students at the University.
 Working closely with the GUBC Club Committee, maintaining clear communication
pathways
 Scottish Basketball Performance Manager.
 Internal relations with Service Development Team, Club Sport Team and colleagues
throughout the department and University.
 Internal link with the Recruitment and International Office, ensuring, where
appropriate, the basketball programme and opportunities are promoted to potential
students.
 Link with the Service Development Team to gain advice and guidance on training
elements for groups and individuals.
Problem Solving




Overall decision maker in all activities related to the basketball programme.
Enhance the breadth of basketball opportunities available to students with limited
funding resources, requires creative thinking to maximise limited funding available.
Dealing with issues around gym based training facilities, utilising experience to
maximise limited training equipment.
Manage problems associated with limited facilities, last minute training/fixture
cancellations.
Other

Requirement to represent the University of Glasgow, and the best interests of the
institution, club and members at national, regional and local meetings as and when
required.
