Major objectives:
 Importance of eukaryotic pathogens
 Challenges of molecular eukaryotic pathogen research
 Techniques and approaches used
o How to choose a technique/approach
o Design of approach, appropriate controls, pitfalls
o Interpretation
 Exposure to major areas of molecular eukaryotic pathogen research
Part I
Emphasis is on how current methods are utilized to identify or functionally analyze virulence
attributes of eukaryotic pathogens.
 Explanation of method: history, rationale, how/why it works
 Brief summaries of specific examples of investigations conducted with fungal or parasitic
pathogens where possible.
 Journal articles will be assigned for some lectures
Part II and III:
Each section will include a ‘participatory’ lecture. Most sections will also include a journal club
led by a student.
Additional journal articles may be assigned for reading prior to class.

EVALUATION
40 % - class participation
20 % - midterm – journal article critique (more info later)
40 % - final – a ‘wee’ problem (more info later)
For midterm and final – you will not have to know any of the details we present (in the absence
of notes/articles). However, you will need to understand the lectures so you can use this
information to understand the journal articles and the final ‘problem’ you will be assigned.
