PARENT/COUNSELOR CONFERENCE To better prepare your student for graduation, Or to assure that your student successfully meets all graduation requirements, and to monitor his/her progress towards graduation, it is important that you have a good understanding/be aware of what courses s/he needs to pass, what grades he must achieve and what tests s/he must pass. The following questions are beneficial to ask as you meet with your student’s counselor. Graduation requirements What courses/classes does my student need to take to meet graduation requirements? Or What are the school’s/district’s graduation requirements? How will my student know which courses he needs to register for? When will my student select his courses for the following school year? Can my student change the classes s/he has selected to take for the following school year? What does my son/daughter need to do to make up an “F” grade? If my student receives an “F” grade in a class, is s/he required to retake that course? If my student receives a “D” grade in a class, is s/he required to retake that course? Summer School When is the first and last day of the summer school session? What are the hours? When is the best time for my student to register for summer school? Does my student need to register for and attend summer school? What classes are offered during the summer school session? How many classes can my student register for during summer school? How many credits can my student earn by attending summer school? Exams What is the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)? Is my student required to take and pass the CAHSEE? When does my student have to take the CAHSEE? If s/he does not pass the CAHSEE, can s/he retake the exam? How many times can my student take the CAHSEE? What can I do as a parent to prepare my student for the CAHSEE? What is the school doing to prepare my student to take and pass the CAHSEE?
