The course covers the following topics: reasons for introducing early foreign language learning into curricula, child’s characteristics in the Piaget’s concrete-operational stage, children’s capacities and constraints in learning a foreign language at an early stage of linguistic, cognitive, affective and psychomotor development; a survey of research in this area, a survey of approaches, procedures and techniques in teaching grammar, lexis and the four language skills appropriate for teaching English to young learners (games, songs and chants, drama activities, stories, etc.); errors and error treatment, the role of audiovisual aids in teaching young learners; assessment and evaluation of young learners’ achievement; raising awareness of language and culture. In the practical part of the course students prepare and present a small-scale project, observe and analyse, and prepare and teach lessons to young learners.
