Find out the year you were born, the year one of your parents was born, and the year
one of your grandparent’s was born.
Find a newspaper front page for the year of your parent’s birth and one for the year of
your grandparent’s birth.
Find five events that occurred during the year of your birth. For each event list who,
what, when, where, why or how about the event.
Write a news article as a reporter might have for each of the five events. Include a
headline for each article.
In the computer room create a newspaper front page for your year of birth. Include
masthead, editor-in-chief, year (date), five articles on the 5 events with headline and
byline for each, and any pictures and graphics. Format, write, edit and print out. Spell
check is necessary.
Using the timeline books complete the charts of events for the three years (you,
parent, and grandparent).
Using Inspiration create a map or timeline of the events listed on your chart for each
of the three years (you, parent, and grandparent).
Find two items to compare between the three years. Example: cars, music, clothing,
movies, magazines, motorcycles, appliances, homes, transportation, cost of bread or
gas etc.)
Write an oral history of your grandparent or a person of the same age (preferably a
relative, but a person of approximately the same age is acceptable.) This oral history
will be produced as the result of an interview with
the person. The oral history document should be one page typed. The final oral
history will be included in the grandparent’s section of the backboard.
Cover backboard
Establish backboard with three sections: one for the year of your birth, one for the
year of your parent’s birth, and one for the year of your grandparent’s birth.
Put the title “Bridging the Generations” at the top of your backboard.
Mount the newspaper front pages on the appropriate sections of your backboard.
Mount the map or time line of events on each of the appropriate sections of your
backboard.
Mount your comparison information for the two items you chose to compare over the
on the backboard.
Mount personal pictures, materials and information on your backboard.
Create captions where appropriate and mount on your backboard.
Create a bibliography for where you located your newspaper front pages, the
information you used to write your news articles, and the items you compared.
Find out a personal story about each of the three people on your backboard to share
with the class during your presentation.
Practice your presentation.
Present to the class. Be sure that you introduce yourself, explain your backboard,
speak clearly, face the class and make eye contact, stand up straight, talk about the
significant events from each of the three years, discuss the items that you compared
between the three years, tell your personal stories, and thank your audience.
