Second Announcement
10th International Winds Workshop
22 - 26 February 2010
Tokyo, Japan
Introduction
One of the key meteorological parameters for weather forecasting, meteorological studies and climate
applications is wind. It has therefore been a major task for the science and operational community to exploit
the imagery data from satellites in order to derive Atmospheric Motion Vectors (AMVs) by tracking observed
cloud and moisture features. The globally derived AMV fields are an established and essential product,
especially for numerical weather prediction, and are complemented by other satellite-based observations of
the atmospheric flow. The biennial International Winds Workshops are the forums used by the International
Winds Working Group (IWWG) for co-operation in the operational and research community, and have
strongly contributed to improvement in the quality of the derived wind fields.
The 10th International Winds Workshop (IWW10) will take place in Tokyo, Japan. The Japanese
Meteorological Agency (JMA) will host the Workshop and the local organiser is Akihiro Shimizu. The
workshop is sponsored by JMA, EUMETSAT, NOAA/NESDIS, and the World Meteorological Organization
(WMO).
The Workshop is an opportunity to present advances and new ideas in this specialised field. We encourage
participation from all organisations operating meteorological satellites, as well as from data users and the
science community. Presentations on operational and experimental wind retrievals from satellite imagery
data and their use for numerical weather prediction, nowcasting or climatological applications are welcome.
In addition, research work on wind retrievals from active and passive microwave instruments and active
optical systems (lidar) is encouraged.

Airport Information and Transportation
Most international flights arrive at Narita International Airport, located about 60 km east of central Tokyo
(http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/). Every visitor to Japan is requested to be fingerprinted and photographed at
immigration control.
There are many options to get to central Tokyo. The major transport services between Narita International
Airport and Tokyo are as follows:
Train
Two railway companies operate express trains from Narita International Airport to central Tokyo. Train
stations are located in the basement of the terminal buildings of the Airport.
(1) The East Japan Railway Co. (JR) operates the Narita Express. It takes about an hour from Narita
International Airport to central Tokyo (JPY 2,940). Although there are various destinations, all the trains stop
at Tokyo Station, where you should get off the train. For details, please refer to
http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/nex/index.html.
(2) The Keisei Electric Railway Co., Ltd operates the airport express Skyliner. It takes about an hour from
Narita International Airport to Keisei Ueno Station (JPY 1,920). Please get off at Keisei Ueno Station (last
stop). For details, please refer to http://www.keisei.co.jp/keisei/tetudou/keisei_us/top.html.
Bus
An airport limousine bus service is available between Narita International Airport and Tokyo City Air Terminal
(TCAT, http://www.tcat-hakozaki.co.jp/eng/top.html), located near Tokyo station, Buses leave for TCAT from
Narita International Airport almost every 10 minutes costing JPY 2,900 (one-way) and JPY 5,200 (round trip).
For details, please refer to http://www.limousinebus.co.jp/en/index.html.
When you arrive at Tokyo Station, Keisei Ueno Station or TCAT, it is recommended to take a taxi to
KKR Hotel Tokyo. It will cost about JPY 1,000. For further information on transportation, please
refer to http://www.jma.go.jp/jma/en/Access/indexe_acs.html.
Currency
The currency of Japan is Yen (JPY). One US dollar is equivalent to about JPY 97 as of 1 July 2009.
Bigger shopping centres accept major credit cards (e.g. Visa, Mastercard), while the smaller shops and the
public transportation system expect you to pay in cash. Foreign currency is not accepted.
Insurance
Delegates are strongly advised to take out personal travel and medical insurance. JMA and the workshop
sponsors will not accept responsibility for any incident arising during the workshop period.
