Summative Test Review
A. Electricity
a. Define Current, Voltage and resistance.
b. What are Current, Voltage and Resistance in terms of
the “Water analogy” for electricity?
c. Draw a series circuit below:
d. Draw a parallel circuit below:
e. Use a resistor colour chart to complete this table:
Note: I will give you a colour chart on the test.
Resistance
Colours
Red-red-orange
740Ω
2.3 KΩ
Green-Orange-black
Red-green-red
f. What does a D-FF do?
g. What is the primary function of a JK-FF?
B. Logic Gates
1. State whether each of the following statements is True or
False.
Remember the sky is always blue and the grass is always green.
a.
b.
c.
d.
e.
f.
The sky is blue or the grass is green.
The sky is brown and the grass is green.
The sky is blue nor the grass is yellow.
The sky is orange nand the grass is brown.
The sky is blue xor the grass is green.
The sky is red nor the grass is red
On the test there will be 10 of these statements. If you get
less then half of them right your get 0/10. After that you get
2 marks per correct response.
C. Learning Points from the class robot
Be able to answer questions using this information from the robot
project:
 A DC motor turns forward or reverse based on
the polarity.
 The robot could turn by turning on the motors
in opposite directions.
 The signal from the parallel cable was too
weak to activate the relays so we boosted it
using transistors.
 A transistor is a switch controlled by
electricity. It is solid-state (no moving parts)
 A relay is also a switch controlled by
electricity. It has moving parts. The low
voltage electric signal energizes an electro
magnet which pulls the switch over.
 Our relays are three way switches. This gave
us the ability to send either power or ground
to each side of the motor to control its
direction form the keyboard.
Parallel Commands:
What number would you need to give parallelput in order to turn
on pins 3 and 5?
What pins would parallelput(17) turn on?
