MIRACOSTA COLLEGE CLASS TITLE: INSTRUCTIONAL COMPUTING COORDINATOR BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Dean, Academic Information Services plan, organize, and manage the implementation of information technology including computers and networks, as well as campus-wide academic and administrative computing; provide supervision and evaluation to staff involved in the activities of the computer labs; provide technical assistance, training, and advice to faculty and administrative staff in determining feasible hardware and software solutions to meet evolving instructional needs for computer labs and classrooms and administrative needs for desktop computing. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 1. Plan, organize, implement and manage the activities, services, and operations of all open computer labs to provide required services in accordance with established priorities. 2. Propose and administer the budget for activities, services, and operations of all open computer labs. 3. Coordinate the activities of all (both open and departmental) computer labs and user support services to assure efficient completion of requests from District departments. Schedule lab instructors in some departmental labs. Manage interdivisional computer network equipment and services including providing preventive and corrective maintenance and performing installation. 4. Confer with faculty and administration in determining requirements for new software/hardware in open computer labs, and modifications of existing software/hardware; formulate strategies to acquire and implement solutions. 5. In consultation with the faculty, plan and direct the implementation of hardware and software installations in departmental computer labs for instructional support. Assist in hiring and training of department staff working in departmental labs. 6. In consultation with Purchasing and Material Management, negotiate contracts for software and hardware for installation in open and departmental computer labs, interdivisional and administrative use. Monitor and report compliance with those contracts. 7. Test and evaluate software and hardware being considered for adoption by the District for instructional or administrative applications. Prepare reports on the utility and quality of software for faculty, staff, and District committees. Assure the compatibility of all lab software with District system and network operating systems. Document and enforce software standards adopted by District committees. 8. Review department activities to assure progress toward objectives; consult with staff and user departments to establish and adjust project priorities/requirements. 9. Administer computer labs maintenance and support contracts; monitor related expenditures. Monitor hardware and software requests from departments to assure conformance with District standards. In consultation with Purchasing and Material Management, negotiate, contract, and monitor services for computer labs outsourced by the District to outside vendors, e.g., for laser printing in all computer labs. 11. Develop policies and procedures for student workers to follow and document these procedures. Determine hire, and evaluate student workers. 12. Coordinate computing support, provide supervision, work direction and evaluation to staff as assigned. 13. Administer Academic Computing (Coordinator) budget as assigned. 14. Contact vendors for information related to the purchase and installation of computer and network equipment and services for interdivisional use. 15. In consultation with Purchasing and Material Management, negotiate software and hardware contracts for all labs and instructional and administrative offices. 16. Monitor and enforce compliance with software licensing and copyright policies of the District. Keep the District informed of changes in such policies that might impact its operations. 17. Consult with SPIT Committee regarding selection, implementation, and use of computer and Local Area Networks (LAN) technologies. 18. Maintain a thorough understanding and awareness of current trends in the areas of computer software and hardware, networking, licensing, and ethical requirements related to computer hardware/software. Participate in related conferences, seminars, and workshops. 19. Administer provision of software support and software and hardware troubleshooting for desktop computing for all staff and faculty. 20. Perform related duties as assigned KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Innovative ways to teach using computer. Theory and operation of LAN hardware and software. Microcomputer hardware including the Macintosh and Windows-based workstations and peripherals. Computer operation and networking. Methods of servicing and repairing computers. Various software packages used for word processing, database management, statistics, graphics, project management, spreadsheet analysis and communications. Networking packages. Principles of computer-managed instruction (CMI) and computer-assisted instruction (CAI). Office methods and equipment including recordkeeping and filing. Principles and practices of supervision and training. ABILITY TO: Work with faculty and staff responsively and interactively, serving as a resource to teaching staff and others. Operate and maintain a variety of microcomputer hardware models and software applications. Troubleshoot and resolve microcomputer processing and networking problems independently. Evaluate hardware and software for effectiveness, efficiency, and continuity with District standards. Consult with vendors and provide recommendations for setting District hardware and software standards. Present for adoption by departments relevant new technologies. Develop training materials. Instruct others in the use and minor repair of computer of computer hardware and software. Provide constructive criticism in an effective, collegial manner. Monitor and control inventory and budget expenditures. Work independently with little direction. Meet schedules and timelines. Plan and organize work. Establish and maintain a positive and cooperative working relationship with members of the data processing department and the college community. Maintain records and prepare reports. Effectively communicate orally, in writing and electronically. Lift and carry microcomputer equipment and supplies for short distances. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with evidence of successful college work in computer information systems; five years of formal training or leadership with demonstrated successful experiences in academic computing, user support services, networks, and microcomputers; a minimum of three years experience in managing computer lab environments required preferably in a college environment; demonstrated successful teaching experience preferred. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver license.
