Introduction This induction pack is provided as an induction guide template for teams/agencies offering placements for student social workers with Anglia Ruskin University. The aim of this pack is to support agencies/teams in setting up a practice placement for student social workers to promote the student social worker’s understanding of the function of the agency, key individuals, external partnerships, and address key practical issues. It is expected that teams/ agencies will alter and develop this induction pack to suit the needs specific to the team/agency, support the student social worker) in undertaking the practice placements This induction pack should be read in conjunction with the Anglia Ruskin University Practice Learning Handbook. Student Social Worker Role/Job Description It is an essential requirement of the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) that all social work students are on practice learning placements are referred to as a “Student Social Worker” to ensure service users and other professionals are aware of their status. In this section agencies/teams are required to identify the role and work the student social worker will be undertaking within the placement learning opportunity. (It may be useful to use an existing job description and amend for the student social worker). 6 6. Health and Safety In this section agencies/teams may find it useful to set out the key health and safety practicalities, such as smoking restrictions, first aid procedures, fire evacuation procedures, panic alarm requirements, and/or e.g. what to do in an emergency. (Agencies/teams may have a standard Health and Safety checklist that could be inserted) 7 7. Practicalities Hours of placement The agency/team hours of working are XXX to XXX (insert times). It is expected that the student social worker with XXX for lunch. hours on placement are XXX to XXX, If the student social worker is likely to be late it is necessary to inform XXXX (identified person) at the earliest opportunity. The student social worker is expected to complete a timesheet whilst on placement which must be signed off each week by their on-site supervisor/practice educator. If there are on-going issues in regard to the student social worker’s timekeeping a meeting will be called to address concerns. Sickness Reporting The student social worker is expected to phone XXXX (named person in the team) on XXXXX (number) by 9:15 am. If the student social worker speaks with a staff member other than their on-site supervisor/practice educator then the student is expected that the student social worker will make contact with either their on-site supervisor/ practice educator later in the same day to advise when it is expected they will return to the placement and the nature of the absence. The student social worker is further required to inform Anglia Ruskin University Practice Team of their absence: contact details are contained within the Anglia Ruskin University Placement Guide If there are concerns in regard to a number of episodes of sickness, then a meeting will be called to address concerns. Deadlines for Work The student social worker is expected to meet all deadlines set by the practice educator and onsite supervisor (if appointed) both in regard to placement academic requirements and in regard to the practice work of the agency. If for any reason the student social worker is concerned with regard to being unable to meet the deadlines then it is the student social worker’s responsibility to raise concerns 8 immediately with either the practice educator and/or onsite supervisor (if appointed) so that appropriate arrangements can be considered. Supervision The Student social worker must attend all supervision sessions arranged with their Practice Educator/On Site Supervisor. Emergency Carer responsibilities If the student social worker is required to fulfil emergency carer responsibilities, it is necessary to follow the same procedures for sickness reporting. Please note that recurring incidences will lead to a meeting being called to address concerns given the implications for the successful engagement and completion of the practice placement. Asking for Support It is the student social worker’s responsibility to ask for support if required. If a student social worker is unable to discuss concerns with their practice educator/onsite supervisor, then it is necessary to raise concerns with either the team/agency manager and/or a member of the Anglia Ruskin University Social Work Practice Team. Transport, Parking and Expenses THIS SECTION IS FOR THE AGENCY TO SET OUT THEIR PROCEDURES AND SIGNPOST TO OTHER POLICIES AS NECESSARY. It is particularly important that the student social worker reviews the agency/team’s policies and procedures relating to safeguarding, lone working, equality and diversity, and risk management. 12 11.
