It is proposed to start quarterly e-news letter from the department of Pediatrics
AFMC Pune for providing various information and update all the Pediatric fraternity of
Armed Forces. This will include all the latest updates, postings, promotions, individual
and collective achievements and interesting academic advances with a view to
disseminate information to all the service Pediatricians. This is an effort by dept of
Pediatrics and information is provided based on feedback from various sources, any
lack of information may be sent to us, to be added in the next issue. It is an earnest
request
to
intimate
all
such
events
to
dept
of
Pediatrics

Short term in-service training - The DGAFMS office is now granting permission
to service officers for 6 month in service training vide letter no. B/67601/TGC/P/DGMS/(b)/
dt 28 Mar 2009 (Being put up on Defence Peds).
It is a good opportunity to pick up the subspecialty and grow into that
subspecialty. This will not only give you individual growth but also boost the specialty.
Lt Col Vishal Sondhi (Hemat-oncology at TMH Mumbai),Lt Col Sameer Bhatia (Genetics
at SGPGI Lucknow) , Wg Cdr B M John (Intensive Care) and WgCdr K Kiran (
Pediatric cardiology) have successfully completed the training.

PEDICON 2010 - The Pedicon 2010 was held at Hyderabad from 7 -11 Jan 2010
and was attended by 20 service Pediatrician and presented over 25 papers. The Office
of the DGAFMS gives permission to all the service officers for attending one conference
in one calendar year on a temporary duty. If you put up a paper, then even registration
fee is also reimbursed. It is good opportunity to attend PEDICON to refresh academic /
professional knowledge and latest in the field of Pediatrics.
PEDICON 2011 will be held in Jan 2011 at Jaipur. Last date of submission of
paper will be end of Aug 10 and you can plan a study to be presented.
Besides
National conference in Neonatology and Intensive Care also can be attended.

Bouquet (a)
Command Hospital (AF) for establishing the state of the art 4 bedded
Pediatric ICU.
(b)
Brig P L Prasad has been nominated as executive member of central IAP.
(c)
Col Madhuri Kanitkar was awarded FIAP during Pedicon 2010 for her
meritorious services to Pediatrics.
(d)
Col Madhuri Kanitkar was judged as best teacher by Maharashtra
University of Health Sciences.
(e)
Col Madhuri Kanitkar has been nominated as President of Indian Society
of Pediatrics Nephrology (ISPN) for 2010.
(f)
Surg Capt SS Mathai has been nominated as Secretary of Neonatology
forum of Maharashtra state.
(g)
Col Rakesh Gupta has been nominated as expert group of Pediatric HIV
at NACO NewDelhi. He has been succeeded in formulating and including
Pediatric HIV Policy 2010 for the Armed Forces.
(h) Wg Cdr V Venkateshwar – has been nominated for appointment of Executive
Editor of prestigious journal MJAFI.
(i) Maj Vishal Puri was awarded as Army Cdr Commendation Card
(j) Sqn Ldr Vivek Gupta - on awarding FIRST Surg Capt Barbara Ghosh gold
medal in Pediatrics.

Pediatric HIV - The new policy on HIV has been finalized and approved by
DGAFMS in Feb 2010 and Pediatrics HIV has been categorized separately for the first
time. Dept of Pediatrics AFMC will be the apex coordinating centre with CHSC, BHDC,
CHAF and INHS Asvini will be the regional nodal centers. It is requested to screen all
the children of seropositive parents and notify these cases to nodal centers and AFMC
central registry, so that these children can be followed up optimally. Separate practical
guidelines will be put up on Defence Peds and being sent to all the Pediatricians.

Defence Peds - The Defence Peds group is actively disseminating the
information to all the group members. All the Pediatrician are requested to become the

this
group

Defence Pediatrician information - The details of all the Pediatrician is
available on the Defence Ped group. Any correction / amendments can be informed to
the dept of Pediatrics.

Gold Medal in Pediatrics:-
Surg Capt Barbara Ghosh gold medal for
scoring highest marks in the grading exam in Advanced course in Pediatrics has
been introduced for the first time and awarded to Sqn Ldr Vivek Gupta during AFMRC
2010.
11.
Journal Scan: -
Maj Vishal Sondhi has successfully been sending us the
Journal scan on Defence Peds. We await his return from “In service hibernation” to
keep us informed.
