(Livingston, NJ) The word is out, actually BLARING, that you do not necessarily have to go under the knife to achieve a youthful, fresh-faced appearance. Touted in magazines galore as the “New New” Face, women have been approaching their doctors seeking the coveted looks of Madonna, Nicole Kidman and Michelle Pfeiffer. Thanks to aesthetic products such as Juvederm, Radiesse and Botox to name a few, these celebrities aged 40 plus do not have to look a day over 35. Susan Stevens Tanne, MD, aesthetic physician and Medical Director of Cosmetic Laser MD in Livingston, NJ has been telling patients for years, “A younger face is a volumized face. I prefer a natural-looking gently plumped face to the obvious pulled faces of recent years. My patients have fit bodies, but often that leaves their faces looking gaunt. Now they can have a full, youthful face to go along with their well-toned bodies. With the spotlight on injectable fillers and wrinkle reducers such as Botox, countless patients have come in asking for the “Filler Facelift,” yet Dr. Tanne is finding that patients are often confused by the plethora of choices on the market today. Many do not know the difference between a dermal filler and a product that causes a relaxing effect on muscles to erase fine lines and wrinkles. “I have actually had patients come in requesting Botox to plump their lips,” says Tanne. “Education is key and utilizing the right product for a specific area of the face can make all the difference.” Juvederm is hyaluronic acid dermal filler in the form of a malleable smooth gel that flows easily into the skin. “I like to use the thin Juvederm gel to fill the hollow area under the eyes and to gently plump the lips, and the thicker variation for the nasolabial folds,” says Tanne. Juvederm is shorter acting than other fillers so it a good “starter” filler for those rookie patients. “My patients want a natural look, especially for the lips, which I can achieve with Juvederm.” Radiesse and Artefill are my go-to fillers for cheek enhancement. Radiesse is synthetic dermal filler made of calcium hydroxyapatite, a mineral component of bone that has been used for many years in the repair of hard and soft tissues of the body. Radiesse is used for soft tissue augmentation like the cheeks and to treat deep skin folds and wrinkles such as marionette lines below the mouth. Radiesse lasts more than twice as long as other fillers, averaging 12-18 months. Artefill, on the other hand, is for the patient who wants a more permanent solution as it is the first and only permanent dermal filler on the market today. ArteFill is a dual-acting non-resorbable injectable wrinkle filler which contains 20% tiny round and smooth particles (PMMA microspheres) and 80% purified bovine collagen gel with 0.3% lidocaine, an anesthetic. First, ArteFill visibly corrects the wrinkle and then the microspheres provide permanent support to the skin for long-lasting wrinkle correction. “The ideal ArteFill patient is one that has experienced “injection fatigue” with the use of temporary fillers. It is important to make sure that the patient has a history of at least one or more injections with temporary fillers that has given them a satisfactory result,” explains Tanne. Botox is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which reduces the activity of the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles of the forehead and crow’s feet around the eyes. “Additionally,” says Tanne, “I like to think of Botox as one of the great sculpting tools. Botox may be injected very delicately at the corners of the eyebrows to give a “nonsurgical brow lift” and at the sides of the chin to bring up the corners of the mouth, so that you feel like you are smiling.” We have just mentioned a handful of choices that are available today. As a patient, it is very important to choose a physician that will educate you as to your needs and expectations as well as what will be most effective both aesthetically and financially.
