Award Criteria
Objective
The objective of the Deloitte Clinical Research Fellowship and Stollery Foundation Academic Fellowship in child
health is to provide individuals specializing in an area of clinical pediatric care, with
1. The opportunity to complete one year devoted to research in an area of need, within that specialty.
2. The opportunity to bring/develop new knowledge within that area of specialization.
3. The opportunity to launch areas of interest to the community of children and allow for an early start to a
fruitful career as a clinician-scientist.
4. The opportunity to meet the clinical and research needs, currently required by the community and un-filled
by current capacity within the Stollery Hospital, or Canadian Pediatric Hospitals.
Funding Criteria










Candidates must hold an M.D. degree and training in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of
Alberta.
All candidates must have a supervisor who has a faculty appointment with the University of Alberta.
The Deloitte Clinical Research Fellowship and Stollery Foundation Academic Fellowship will be awarded for
a one year term upon initial approval. The Fellow is eligible to apply for one additional year of funding
through re-application, and will be subject to the same level of review as the original application, for a
possible maximum of two years funding.
The Deloitte Clinical Research Fellowship and Stollery Foundation Academic Fellowship provide stipend
support of approximately $70,000.00 per year plus benefits.
Recognize, that there will be a committee determined, according to the needs of the applicant to help
foster and ensure success for the candidate.
The candidate must have an indication of assured protected time to do the research of a minimum of 80%
by their supervisor and division head.
The Deloitte Clinical Research Fellowship and Stollery Foundation Academic Fellowship will be offered to
the top ranked applicants with a clinical research focus, meeting the criteria listed.
There will be up to one candidate for the Deloitte Clinical Research Fellowship and up to two candidates for
the Stollery Foundation Academic Fellowship funded per year.
Where it is deemed that there is no suitable candidate, the funding may lapse for one year.
Acceptance and Enrolment in the Fellowship program must be started between July 1, 2015 and January 1,
2016.
Application Deadline: September 30, 2014, 4:00pm. Late applications WILL NOT be accepted. Applications can be
submitted to Marni Devlin Moses at ECHA 3-467 via one hard copy and a PDF copy of the complete application and
attachments (marni.devlinmoses@ualberta.ca).
Review Criteria
Proposals for the Deloitte Clinical Research Fellowship and Stollery Foundation Academic Fellowship will be
reviewed by a Scientific/Fellowship Review Committee, of the Department of Pediatrics, Stollery Children’s
Hospital. Each application will be reviewed by at least 2 committee members, and adjudicated by the entire
committee. There will be no appeal process. All applications will be reviewed on the following criteria:
 Performance: Candidate’s Clinical Performance, Awards and Publication Records
o Publications will be evaluated on productivity and quality of journal.
o Candidate’s evaluations during postgraduate training may be taken into account for evaluation of
clinical and academic performance.
o Reference letters from the Supervisor and 2 others (total of 3 letters).
 Research Project (3 pages maximum)
o Introduction and Background - relevance to child health medicine.
o Project Outline: immediate objective; methods employed; estimated timeline; preliminary data;
applicant’s role in the project and expected outcomes/future plans.
o The role of the applicant in the project must be specifically detailed.
o Laboratory/Clinical environment: location and description of designated space; shared facility and
equipment availability for the project outlined (1/2 page maximum included within 3 pages).
o Knowledge Translation of Project (1/2 page, minimum included within the 3 pages).
o Relevance of Project to Future Career Goals.
 Project’s Support Structure
o Project budget – Required Funding/Monies needed for Project to be undertaken. If funding is held
outside the University, evidence of funding must be provided.
o Ethics Approval (to be supplied by the start date of fellowship).
o Summary of approved funding that supports the project.
o Candidates Curriculum Vitae (2 – page abbreviated).
o Supervisor’s Curriculum Vitae (2 – page abbreviated).
o Adequate funding by the Supervisor to support the project.
 Reporting
o A Final report will be a requirement of the candidate, indicating the progress and future direction
of the project. The report must be directed to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and its
benefactor.
For the Deloitte Clinical Research Fellowship, inherent in accepting the fellowship, the candidate is
expected to participate in an annual luncheon hosted by Deloitte and Touche LLP, and any reasonable other
requests for participation regarding the fellowship. In addition, a copy of any published research papers
written by the Deloitte Fellow will be sent to the managing partner in the local Deloitte office, including
acknowledgement of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.
