The copper vapor laser is an ideal light source for forensic investigation. The wavelength is deep green with a tinge of blue. This is a perfect color for exciting naturally occurring organic chemicals or dyes applied to evidence. Unlike the continuous argon ion lasers, a CVL emits thousands of short intense pulses of light each second. This characteristic has proven to be the most effective way to induce fluorescence. The time it takes for a high power light pulse to be absorbed by a molecule and the time required by the molecule to relax and emit the fluorescent light is well matched to CVL timing. This means that less average power will achieve the same or better results. Argon lasers also require 4 to 5 time more input power than CVL’s. This means much more heat to dissipate, and a three phase hook-up. Laser tube replacement is considerably more expensive. The CVL is driven at 8000 pulses per second. There is no perception of flicker. The Nd:YAG laser used in forensic applications is driven at 30 pulses per second. Although the peak power is as effective as the CVL, the pulse rate produces a flicker that is irritating to the eye. Furthermore, the light emits in the yellow-green. This color is less efficient in inducing fluorescence with examination techniques using Zinc Chloride and other chemicals less responsive to long wave green. Refer to our brochure for a detailed description of CJ Laser’s SERIES 2000 Metal Vapor Lasers. ADVANTAGES OF THE "EXAMINER" SYSTEM Operational simplicity, superior performance and long term value . are unsurpassed among forensic laser systems. The "EXAMINER" is designed for convenience. Consider the facts and compare: BOTH LASER HEAD AND CONTROLLER ARE WATER COOLED. EXAMINATION ROOM WILL NOT OVERHEAT. THE THE 8000Hz PULSE RATE IS NOTICEABLY QUIET COMPARED TO THE 6000Hz USED IN COMPETITIVE CVL's. PHONE CALLS AND SPEECH CAN BE CONDUCTED IN NORMAL TONES. GROUNDING AND EMI PROTECTION ARE CONVINCIN GLY SUPERIOR TO COMPETITIVE CVL's. NEARBY EQUIPMENT WILL NOT BE AFFECTED. THE BEAM DIAMETER IS SMALL AND HAS NATURALLY LOW DIVERGENCE. THIS PERMITS THE USE OF SMALL CORE DIAMETER FIBER. THE FIBER OPTIC CABLE REQUIRED FOR OUR LASER COSTS LESS THAN 20% OF THE CABLE USED BY BIG BEAM COMPETITIVE MODELS. THIS WILL SAVE THOUSANDS IF LENGTHY CABLES ARE REQUIRED. THE YELLOW LIGHT IS REJECTED TO BETTER THAN ONE PART IN A MILLION. COMPETITIVE CVL's PASS MORE YELLOW AND DEGRADE FLUORESCENCE. METAL REFILLING AND RESTARTING TAKES LESS THAN 1.5hrs. COMPETITIVE MODELS TAKE UP TO A FULL DAY. THE LASER IS FULLY AUTOMATIC. TURN A KEY, PRESS A BUTTON AND THE LASER WILL SELF-CHECK AND BE OPERATIONAL IN LESS THAN AN HOUR. THE LASER HEAD AND CONTROLLER ARE MODULAR DESIGNS GUARANTEED TO ACCEPT FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS AND ENHANCED FUNCTIONS. FREQUENCY DOUBLING INTO THE ULTRAVIOLET AND DYE LASER PUMPING ARE POSSIBLE. THE BASIC UNITS WILL NEVER BECOME OBSOLETE. MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS ARE MINIMAL & UNCOMPLICATED. THE EXAMINER CAN BE INSTALLED IN A VAN FOR ON SITE APPLICATIONS. A sturdy table approximately 8ft long for supporting the laser head, 3 x 3ft of floor space for the controller and table top area for evidence examination. THE COMPLETE FORENSICS EXAMINATION PACKAGE .. The EXAMINER is a complete, ready to go, turn key forensic examination system. CJ Laser developed the approach in collaboration with the Illinois State Police, Division of Forensic Services. We asked for their wish list and engineered each component to meet or exceed the specification. All equipment listed below is included in the purchase price. We invite item by item comparison to any other system. GUARANTEED TO PROVIDE POWER TO SERVE AT LEAST TWO WORK STATIONS SIMULTANEOUSLY .... CJ Laser achieves higher performance with 12 watts of average power than systems of 20 watts or more. The formula lies in exploiting the superior beam quality and output stability. Crisp definition, small diameter, high power density and low divergence support effective light controls and compliment the various techniques used in the lab. Our working sessions with the Illinois Forensic Examiners defined the need for a finesse approach. The high average power, large beam diameter designs used in the past were wasteful and expensive. However, they conclusively proved the value of CVL's. Each component is configured specifically for forensic applications. BEAM INSERTION INSTRUMENT This component attaches over the output aperture of the laser and positions the beam into the fiber. An adapter is attached to the laser housing. This adapter is tapered and keyed to accept the beam insertion instrument. It precisely repositions the assembly when it is removed from the front of the laser during metal refilling. The attachment is secured by a threaded collar. The entry aperture has provision for a 1.5"dia normal incidence optical filter. The filter can be quickly exchanged. The output beam is inserted into the fiber by turning three coaxial control rings. These rings manipulate the focal point of a lens and the fiber optic termination into optimal alignment. Adjustments are truly orthogonal X-Y-Z axis controls. The Z axis adjustment is set initially and need not be tweaked. X and Y axis tuning is similar to focusing a camera lens. The tuning rings are designed for 100% tactile operation. They are close to each other but distinctly separated. The operator can tune from any angle even in total darkness. Tuning resolution can be selected by exchanging modular inserts. This feature increases the versatility by matching mechanical movement to the fiber core size. Exchange takes about a minute, is easily accessed and requires only an alien wrench. The insertion instrument has a internal beam attenuating shutter. The operator cannot be exposed to laser light when the fiber optic cable is inserted or removed. The cable is equipped with a. large diameter termination fitting for easy insertion and resistance to breakage. FIBER OPTIC CABLE ASSEMBLY Fiber cable length can be provided to customer specification. CJ Laser provides all cables with outer jacket of flexible, helically wound stainless steel tube. A liner is fitted between the outer jacket and fiber to protect the fiber from abrasion. One end of the cable is equipped with a connector mated to the insertion instrument. The other end is provided with a standard LMA style connector. The SMA termination is internalized into the handset. However, it can be accessed if cable replacement becomes necessary. The cable end of the handset functions as a strain relief mount and access limiting cover. OUTPUT HANDSET The output handset is the system component which functions as the output aperture. It is equipped with a pushbutton type internal beam attenuating shutter. If the button is released, the light will shut off. A receptacle is provided into which the handset can be inserted.. It is a ring which can be held by a lab stand or hardware having a 1/4"-20 stud. The receptacle provides hands off operation yet maintains the shutter operation. When the handset is in the receptacle, an axial twist will actuate the button and control the light. If for any reason the handset is removed, the button will be released and the light will shut off. The output end has a lens which collimates the highly divergent light emitting from the fiber end. The lens can be focused within a limited range, removed entirely or replaced with another optical element. LIGHT CONTROL ACCESSORY The LC-2036 Light Control Accessory works in conjunction with the handset. It provides a means of regulating the amount of light. A 1/4-20 threaded hole permits attachment to a gimbaled rod and base for mounting above the work surface. The system provides convenient and safe positioning flexibility. The oper ator has both hands free to position the evidence. Vertical location along the post will determine the illuminated area at any power setting. Regulation of the light source provides the control necessary to obtain optimum signal to noise ratio from illuminated evidence. It makes sense to -control the level of illumination in the same fashion as a photographer. For example, excessive light will cause background to fluoresce. If the background is too bright, a photograph of the subject matter will not exhibit the evidence clearly. OPERATION IS SIMPLE 1. INSERT THE HANDSET & TWIST TO TURN ON THE LIGHT 2. ADJUST THE IRIS DIAPHRAGM TO THE DESIRED INTENSITY 3. ADJUST THE HEIGHT TO OBTAIN THE DESIRED COVERAGE MULTI-COLOR AND YELLOW OUTPUT The FDS-2000 F1 is configured for forensic applications requiring monochromatic 510nm green light. If full laser power must be delivered through the fiber, remove the yellow blocking entry filter and handset lens. This will allow both the 510nm and 578nm yellow light to be delivered through the fiber. The handset lens must be replaced with a non-filtering lens to collimate the beam. If divergent light suits the application, no lens is required. Consult the factory for price and delivery of green blocking collimating lenses, unfiltered lenses and green blocking entry filters. DBA-2000 – DUAL BEAM OUTPUT ASSEMBLY The DBA-2000 2B Dual Beam Output Assembly converts a single output aperture into two apertures. The 2B version is configured for forensic applications. The internal beam attenuating shutter existing within the laser head will turn off both beam outputs simultaneously. The two color output beam exits the laser aperture as usual. Part of the beam reflects off the first surface of a beam splitter and part transmits through the beam splitter. The reflected portion of the beam travels to a mirror, is reflected off the first surface, and exits along the centerline of the auxiliary aperture. The transmitted beam exits along the primary aperture centerline with slight horizontal displacement due to refraction through the splitter. Adjustments are provided to allow the user to precisely position both beams. All coatings are high efficiency dielectrics. Optics options are available which provide any combination of green and/or yellow from both apertures. MOUNTING A mounting adapter attaches to the output face of laser and accepts the DBA-2000 housing. The mount need not be removed for metal filling, maintenance or laser operation without attachments. A 2.0” square #10-32 threaded mounting hole pattern is available at the center of each aperture. The FDS-2000 Fl tapered adapter is attached over the primary aperture. The remaining aperture can be used for a second fiber delivery system. If this option is not elected, the aperture is covered.
