Choosing/declaring their major, including choosing an option/concentration Switching options within the major. Submitting a graduation application (see Graduation Applications below). Following up on a graduation application. Graduate school and other long-term goals. Disqualification Scheduling an Appointment. Students may phone or go to the College of Business and Economics Advisement Center (SHC 256B) when they want an appointment with an advisor. Students should note the name of the advisor with whom they have an appointment and the date and time of the appointment. Students should notify the CBE Advisement Center when/if they wish to cancel an appointment with an adviser there. Graduation Applications must be submitted to the CBE Advisement Center during the application filing period two quarters before the final courses are taken to complete the degree. Students should pick up a graduation application (2 forms) from Administration 146, complete the forms, pay the Cashier (using 1st form) and bring these forms and a copy of their program to any advisor in the Department of Management for signature. Quarterly deadlines for submitting a graduation application are published in the Schedule of Classes each quarter on the “Graduation Information” page; see index in back of the Schedule. Expectations of Students. It is important for students to understand that they must take an active role in advisement. Students are responsible for making and following through on their own decisions. They are expected to 1. Meet with an advisor in Management to get and sign a program. (Phone 323-3432890). Ask any questions or address issues they wish to discuss with the faculty advisor. Bring copies of transcripts and letters from the university to the meeting. 2. Familiarize themselves as much as possible with the degree requirements, including those for their GE upper division theme, diversity courses and option/concentration. Page 4 of 4 Handouts are available in the Management Department (Simpson Tower 717) for this, with course substitution forms and other advisement-related materials. 3. Check their CSULA email account regularly. This is the official means of communication used by the University. 4. Check the Schedule of Classes well before each quarter begins and note all relevant deadlines such as the fee payment deadline, the drop deadline, etc. 5. Enroll and attend the needed classes. Maintain a record of courses completed and progress toward the degree. Bring the record if they visit an advisor. 6. Apply for graduation at the correct time (two quarters before their last quarter). Expectations of Advisors: Advisors in the Management Department are expected to do the following in their advisement sessions with students: 1. Help students develop an academic plan for the degree that takes into account (as appropriate) the option/concentration, minor (if chosen), and catalog year. 2. Review the students' grades and selection of classes if needed. 3. Provide students with relevant information about University requirements, policies, and procedures, and refer students to appropriate campus resources as needed. 4. Explain university rules and requirements when reviewing student requests. 5. Help students plan appropriate steps to correct any academic difficulties. 6. Help students complete graduation applications and plan for graduate school and post-graduate careers as appropriate. Expected Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Students will demonstrate personal responsibility for their own academic, personal, and professional success. 2. Students will know which courses they need to complete their major, enroll in appropriate courses and graduate in a timely manner. 3. Students will know the necessary information, resources, and available options to make reasonable educational and career decisions.
