This land was thick with forest And is now of trees bereft The cacophony of war is gone And a peaceful quiet left The windmill stands in silence Amidst the pumpkins and the corn The grass and soil are fertile When once they were war torn And it’s just outside of Wulvergem That they laid your body down Beneath the skies your eyes last seen In a foreign field and ground Far away from little brook And fields of green to roam Far away from loving look And far away from home For here it is that Tommy fell And his story was not told But now the time has come to tell Of young Tommy oh so bold Because he fought for freedom Midst the madness and insane And we live in peace and comfort His loss was not in vain He was only 24 When young Tommy gave his life No children no future No home no loving wife At the going down of the sun Our hearts and thoughts are set For Thomas Francis Durr We never will forget.
