Course Description:
Family and Consumer Sciences Exploratory I, provides a foundation for managing individual, family, career, and
community roles and responsibilities. In FACS Exploratory I, students focus on areas of individual growth such as
personal goal achievement, responsibilities within the family, and accountability for personal safety and health. They
also explore and practice financial management, clothing maintenance, food preparation, positive and caring
relationships with others, and self-assessment as related to career exploration. Students apply problem-solving and
leadership skills as they progress through the course. Mathematics, science, English, social sciences, fine arts, and
technology are integrated throughout the course.
Course Objectives:













Understand the scope and sequence of the Teen Living course.
Demonstrate reading, math, writing, speaking and listening, and computer literacy skills desired for employment
in a chosen career field.
Demonstrate reasoning, problem-solving, and decision making skills.
Participate in Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).
Participate as a team member to accomplish goals.
Examine the effects of family on work and work on family.
Strengthen the well-being of individuals and families across the life span.
Become responsible citizens and leaders in family, community, and work settings.
Apply optimal nutrition and wellness across the life span.
Manage resources to meet the material needs of individuals and families, to include apparel and textiles,
nutrition and wellness, housing, and leadership to reach individual goals.
Use critical and creative thinking skills to address problems in diverse families, communities, and work
environments.
Function effectively as consumers of goods and services.
Actively participate in practical problem solving focusing on financial literacy, career planning, living in a global
environment and relating to others.
Course Scope and Sequence:

Food and Nutrition = 6 weeks
Fabric Creations = 6 weeks
Life Skills = 6 weeks

Texts and Materials:
8th grade - $ 5fee covers the cost of patterns and embroidery supplies. A list of additional
supplies (fabric, thread and elastic) will be sent out prior to the sewing unit.
Students are required to provide on a daily basis: their agenda, pen or pencil, Teen Living notebook and lined paper.
Today’s Teen by Glencoe is available in the classroom as a supplemental textbook.
Grading Procedures and Policies:
Classwork, Projects, Food Laboratory experiences, quizzes and tests measure
student progress.
Students are responsible for requesting missed work due to absence.
Princess Anne Middle School is implementing an academic detention program
for teachers to utilize with students who fail to complete assigned work.
Teachers will issue academic detention to students who fail to complete
classwork, homework, or other assignments for the Wednesday following the
week in which the work was due. Wednesday detentions will be held from 4:005:30 PM, and parents will be notified of the detention via an AlertNow email.
The purpose of the academic detention is to notify parents of missing
assignments and to ensure students complete and return work considered
important to the learning process. Students who must serve detention will be
required to complete the work owed during that time frame. Keep in mind
these academic detentions will not become part of a student’s disciplinary record.

Help Sessions:
Students may arrange extra help by appointment with their teacher Students must have an agenda signed by the
teacher to enter the building before school hours. Students must provide a note from their parents giving them
permission to stay after school for extra help.

Please feel free to email me or phone me about any matter regarding your child. If I am not available by
phone, you may leave a message in my voice mailbox and I will try to return your call as quickly as
possible.
Citizenship Expectations:
In order to ensure students a safe and productive environment in the classroom, students are expected to maintain
self-discipline and follow rules and procedures.

Safety Guidelines:
Student safety in the Food and Sewing Lab is essential. Students and Parents will be required to sign a Safety
Guideline Agreement. The failure to follow these guidelines will result in the loss of privileges for the student and
the proper disciplinary action will be taken. Students are expected to wear closed toed shoes in the Foods Lab.
Please contact the teacher if extenuating circumstances exists preventing the return of Lab fees, supplies or parent’s
signature by required due date.
