SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A.

Description: Engineered system for discharge and total flooding of hazard areas with "FM200," made by Great Lakes Chemical Corp.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A.
Design clean-agent extinguishing system to include main and reserve cylinders and obtain
approval from the Engineer and authorities having jurisdiction. Design system for Class A,
B, or C fires as appropriate for areas being protected and include safety factor. Use clean
agent indicated and in concentration suitable for normally occupied areas.
B.
Performance Requirements: Upon receiving a signal to discharge, the [FM-200] shall be
discharged within 10 seconds and maintain 7.1 percent concentration by volume at
21 deg. C (70 deg. F) for 10-minute holding time in hazardous areas.

FM-200 concentration in hazard areas greater than 9 percent immediately after discharge or
less than 5.8 percent throughout holding time will not be accepted without written
authorization from the Employer and authorities having jurisdiction.

System Capabilities: Minimum 4278 kPa calculated working pressure and 2484 kPa
initial charging pressure.

Cross-Zoned Detection: Include devices located in two separate zones. Sound alarm on
activating single-detection device, and discharge extinguishing agent on actuating singledetection device in other zone.

Actuating First Detector in one zone: Give visual indication on annunciator panel,
energize audible alarm, shut down air-conditioning and ventilating systems serving
protected area, release and close doors in protected area, and send signal to fire alarm

panel, energize audible alarm, shut down power to protected equipment, actuate time
delay for extinguishing-agent discharge for 30 seconds, and release extinguishing
agent.
Extinguishing-agent discharge will operate audible alarms and strobe lights.

Professional Engineer Qualifications: A professional engineer who is legally qualified to
practice in jurisdiction where Project is located and who is experienced in providing
engineering services of the kind indicated. Engineering services are defined as those
performed for installations of clean-agent extinguishing systems that are similar to those
indicated for this Project in material, design, and extent.
B.
Source Limitations: Obtain extinguishing agent and equipment through one source.
C.
Product Options: Drawings indicate size, profiles, and dimensional requirements of cleanagent extinguishing systems and are based on the specific system selected. Other
manufacturers' systems with equal performance characteristics may be considered. Refer to
Division 1 Section "Product Requirements."
D.
Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in
NFPA 70, Article 100, by a testing agency acceptable to the Engineer.
E.
ASME Compliance: Fabricate piping to comply with ASME B31.1, "Power Piping."

shall be provided with a seal to protect the nozzle from clogging by grease or other
obstructions. This seal shall detach upon actuation.

Tighten electrical connectors and terminals according to manufacturer's published
torque-tightening values. If manufacturer's torque values are not indicated, use those
specified in UL 486A and UL 486B.
LABELING

Install labeling on piping, extinguishing-agent containers, other equipment, and panels
according to NFPA 2001.

Clear instructions shall be displayed at the entrance and inside the protected zones advising
the occupants to the minimum required actions to be taken in case of emergency / system
discharge. Instructions wording shall be coordinated with and approved by the authorities
having jurisdiction.

FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A.
Professional Engineer: Inspect installed clean-agent extinguishing systems, prepare
installation report, and certify that installation complies with the Contract Documents and
calculations, and comments of authorities having jurisdiction.
B.
Comply with operating instructions and procedures of NFPA 2001, Section "Approval of
Installations." Include the following inspections and tests to demonstrate compliance with
requirements:
