KLERCK FAMILY HISTORY ACCORDING TO PAMA (SEE SOURCE 4) Verbatim from a chapter entitled Dutch Aristocrats (p 61-63): ‘A family of much the same aristocratic rank as the Van Rheedes were the Klercks. It is probably unique in South Africa that a family not only possesses the portraits of its ancestors who came to the Cape in the eighteenth century, but also has a picture of the house built by them, graced by a decorated pediment on which they placed their joint coat of arms. In addition the Government Archives also possesses a fine hatchment of the man, complete with the arms of his sixteen paternal and maternal ancestors, the ‘seize quartiers’, and the arms of his two wives. And as if that were not enough, the same archives also possesses a beautifully executed family chronicle, with still more coats of arms, the ‘Genealogia Klerckiana’ caligraphed, according to the title page, by MC Volhard in 1770. It is well worth a visit to the archives in Queen Victoria Street to see and admire these interesting relics. According to the manuscript the family came originally from Bohemia (Czechoslovakia) where they were known as Klerck von Petershem (incorrect: von Petersom, also spelt as von Petersheim). One of their members was a page in the service of Frederick of Bohemia, the well-known ‘Winter King’, fled with him to Holland when all was lost, and settled in 1613 in the town of Rhenen (incorrect: a Klerck was the Chamberlain (right-hand man) to the King and he had two sons who were pages to the King). Again according to Volhard, they then dropped the Von Petershem part of their surname, now simply calling themselves Klerck and retaining only the coat of arms with the two keys of St Peter to remind them of their origin. It is a touching story but unfortunately, as so many similar ones, it was unable to survive modern genealogical research. Volhard himself was not very sure about it when he wrote it down, and had to confess ‘perhaps I have not remembered it too well.’ He was right in this assumption because the documented genealogy in the ‘Nederland’s Adelsboek’, the equivalent of the British Debrett, relates quite a different story. If there was ever any Bohemian origin, the authors did not discover it. It appears, in fact, that the Klercks always lived at Rhenen and that the oldest known ancestor was a Cornelis Gerritszoon Clerck, who is mentioned there in 1574 and died in 1585. The builder of the Cape House, Willem Jan Klerck, was his descendant in the seventh generation. But even without the Bohemian ancestry the family was distinguished enough to serve for many generations in the Rhenen town council, and in 1833 were ennobled by King Willem II of the Netherlands. Willem Jan was also born at Rhenen, obtained a commission in the Dutch navy and finally became a naval captain and Commander of the frigate ‘De Swaluw’ between 1791 and 1793. The frigate went to the Dutch East Indies and this brought Klerck to the Cape where he met Aletta Wilhelmina Deneys (although a letter from the Dutch archives states that Klerck in fact sold De Swaluw in China; it is assumed that the ship which brought him to Cape Town, a Danish ship called Thetis, also carried his future wife, and mother of the SA Klercks, Aletta).. They became engaged and after they had married Klerck decided to leave the navy and settle permanently at the Cape. It was probably in this period that he built the house in Boomstraat, now Commercial Street. Today it is a street of warehouses and wholesalers, but when called Boomstraat and even earlier when it was known by the aristocratic-sounding name of Ridderstraat (Knight Street) it was a much sought-after residential area in which civil servants of the Dutch East India Company of the highest ranks used to live. Colin Graham Botha gave a charming picture of them as they sat on their stoeps, discussing current affairs while smoking their long Gouda clay pipes. In Klerck’s time the retired Ad Interim Fiscal Gabriel Exter lived there and he himself was no less important a personality. What Klerck did during the first British occupation I have been unable to discover except that, according to the Cape Directory of 1800, he still lived in Boomstraat and evidently had not left the country. When the Dutch returned he was appointed Weesmeester (Master of the Orphan Chamber) in 1804 and later, under the second British administration, he became a Receiver of Revenue. His wife Aletta Wilhelmina Deneys belonged to a family who was already for several generations in the service of the Dutch East India Company. Her father, Jacob Pieter, born at the Cape, was eventually appointed to the rank of Merchant and placed in charge of the Company’s possession of Sadraspatnam, on the coast of Coromandel, in India. It was here that Aletta was born. In 1791 Deneys was made a prisoner of war by the British but later exchanged against a certain George Proctor. Back at the Cape he became Ad Interim Fiscal. 8 The coat of arms of the Deneys’s was a horse ‘regardant’ and when Klerck’s house was finished he combined this coat of arms with his own arms, showing the keys, and placed them on the pediment. I know of no other examples of heraldic decorations on houses at the Cape and it was probably unique, although obviously fashioned after examples in Holland where such heraldic decorations were quite common, especially in Amsterdam. On his seal, still preserved in the Cape Archives, Klerck also placed the combined arms of himself and his wife. That was not unusual in his time either, although less so at the Cape. It may be wishful thinking but because of this persistent habit of combining the two arms one cannot help feeling that perhaps Klerck and his wife were very much in love with each other and showed it in this heraldic way. However, it may also have been nothing more than convention. In any case, when Aletta died in December 1816 Klerck remarried, hardly three months later, with Catharina Maria Munnik, which seems unduly quick. The arms of both wives were placed on the hatchment which now hangs in the museum of the Cape Archives, the Munnik arms being ‘canting’: a monk with a rosary. The house in Boomstraat remained known as Klerck House even after the family no longer lived there. When Arthur Elliott photographed it about 1900 it already looked rather neglected, and it was demolished before Cape Town had learned to treasure its worthy antiquities. The two-storeyed house with its heraldic pediment was no doubt one of the more interesting houses of the city and had certainly merited preservation, even if the street in which it stood had completely lost its original dignified character. Willem and Aletta had five children and from their two sons the present family descends. They retained their ties with Holland longer than was usual: a century ago one of them still served in the Netherlands navy, and even today they have relatives in Holland as some of the family married there. The ennobled branch of the family became extinct in 1926 and because of this some of the old family heirlooms were sent to the surviving branch in South Africa, amongst them ‘Genealogia Klerckiana’ manuscript. At the Cape they always remained a small family and are often confused with the more numerous De Klerks to whom they are not related. Most members went into the professions and the majority of them now live in the Transvaal. Note: italics ours (APF and MvPK). 6.
