THE CHARTERED SOCIETY OF PHYSIOTHERAPY COUNCIL TITLE: Chief Executive’s Report STATUS: For information SUMMARY: This paper is for information and gives details of the external meetings attended by the Chief Executive during the period 17th September to 10th December 2008. It does not include the many internal meetings. ACTION: To note Paper No C(08)114 Saturday 20th to Wednesday 24th September Attended the Labour Party Conference in Manchester with Kenryck Lloyd-Jones, Policy Officer Scotland. Opportunities to speak to were taken with health ministers, Alan Johnson, Ben Bradshaw, Ann Keen and Ivan Lewis. We also had discussions with a wide range of health organisations including NHS Confederation as well as asking relevant questions at seminars and fringes. Monday 29th, Tuesday 30th September Attended the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham with the Chair of Council, Liz Cavan and the Interim Policy and Research Officer, Helen Braysher. Opportunities to speak to Andrew Lansley (Shadow Secretary of State for Health); - Grayling (Shadow Secretary of State for Pensions), the Shadow Health team and members of the Shadow Treasury Team, raising issues relating to physiotherapy and AHPs. Wednesday 1st October CSP Pension Trustees meeting – the pension scheme investments have done better than the stock market as a whole. (No immediate action is required, but will be kept under review.) Thursday 2nd October Meeting with The Stroke Association – Jon Barrick, CEO and Joe Korner, Director of Communications with Lynne Stockbridge, Director of Communications and Marketing. To discuss ways of joint working between the organizations in light of the lack of resources for effective community rehabilitation for stroke survivors, the DH agenda on fitness to work and the Dame Carol Black report as it affects stroke survivors of working age. Tuesday 7th October Meeting with the executive of Physiofirst: Eric Lewis, Chair; Paul Donnelly, General Secretary; Sandy Lewis, Press Relations Officer with Liz Cavan, Chair; Sue Browning, Deputy CEO; Jill Higgins, Director of Practice and Development; James Hale, Director of Marketing and Communications. Areas of discussion covered: Physiofirst’s data collection project; new graduates and private practice; contributing to the CIOG Review and BUPA’s plans to reduce the number of approved private practitioners and update on projects between the organisations. Hosted a CSP Staff reception to celebrate the achievement of gaining the Investors in People Award Thursday 9th and Friday 10th October HSJ Policy Summit at Runnymede, Surrey. Chatham House rules applied. Attended by 60 of the most senior people in the NHS, including most of the English DH top team. There were discussions around a wide range of topics including the impact of the credit crunch on the future of NHS budgets. I used the opportunities to lobby for physiotherapy and AHPs. The Presidents of the Royal College of General Practitioners and the Royal College of Surgeons were the only other professional organisations in attendance. Monday 13th October Richard Balfe, Conservative Party Trade Union Envoy a meeting with Lesley Mercer, Director of Employment Relations and Union Services Thursday 16th – Saturday 18th October Congress 2008 and AGM – Manchester Tuesday 21st October Attended the Chief Health Professions Officer’s Conference with Directors and colleagues from the AHPF. The Secretary of State for Health, Alan Johnson announced the go-ahead for self referral to physiotherapy in England. The announcement followed publication of the results of the self referral pilots, carried out jointly by the Department of Health and the CSP. He also 2 announced the compulsory collection of waiting times data for AHPs by 2010 and a commitment to reduce long waits through better commissioning. Thursday 23rd October Opened the Physiotherapy Assistants Board Conference with Chair and Vice Chair of Council in Birmingham Monday 3rd November CSP Education Launch reception attended by Karen Middleton, Chief Health Professions Officer Wednesday 5th November Attended a meeting of the AHPF with the Chair of Council (see separate report for details) Tuesday 11th November Meeting with Laurence Buckman, Chair of the General Medical Council with Liz Cavan, Chair of Council to discuss ways of working with GPs over self referral for physiotherapists Evening reception of the College of Occupational Therapists with the Chair, Liz Cavan Wednesday 12th November Farewell reception for Julia O’Sullivan, Head of Research and Development moving on after 27 years at the CSP to become the Head of Education for the Royal College of Surgeons Dental Faculty. Friday 14th and Saturday 15th November Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapy Annual Conference in Dundalk, Eire with the Chair of Council, Liz Cavan. Tuesday 25th November Meeting with Equality Works to discuss SMT leadership development Tuesday 18th November Healthcare Reference Group Wednesday 19th November Management Group Stroke Association Royal Lecture at the Royal College of Surgeons. Opportunity to network and lobby. 3 Thursday 20th November NHS National Stakeholder Forum. It is attended by all the English Health Ministers. The agenda items covered health inequalities. The Secretary of State, Alan Johnson, gave a clear indication, in response to a question, that self referral would be a central part of the response to the Carol Black Report. Monday 24th November CSP Awards at the Russell Hotel Monday 1st December Meeting with the Health Profession Council (HPC) – Anna van der Gaag, President and Chief Executive, Mark Seale with Liz Cavan, Chair of Council, Jill Higgins, Director of Practice and Development and Seye Aina, Professional Regulatory Officer. Discussions around improving the renewals processes, update on other groups seeking HPC approval and improved joint working.
