Rural and Remote Nursing Western NSW LHD Rural & Remote Transition Program 2013 Enjoy The Experience 0 Western NSW Local Health District Transition to Practice Programs (New Graduate RN) Overview Western NSW LHD offers a number of different transitional programs including: • Base Hospital Program • Mental Health Program • Regional Hospitals Program • Rural & Remote Program These programs are designed to give a broad range of clinical experiences in order to equip newly registered nurses with the necessary skills and confidence required to practice as a competent registered nurse. There is a strong focus on the special skills required by registered nurses practicing in rural and regional settings, which enhances and consolidates your nursing knowledge. All of our programs are available either part-time or fulltime with some flexibility regarding clinical rotations. Advantages and Supports for Western NSW LHD Transitional RNs • Preceptor support and support from other Registered Nurses in all departments • The opportunity to acquire ward management skills in all clinical rotations. In the Base Hospitals and Regional Hospitals the transitional nurse is rostered on as the second registered nurse on duty at all times • Tailored Development plans, Clinical Competency Workbook and Professional Portfolio Formal orientation program to the Western NSW LHD and the Hospital as well as individual orientation to all clinical rotations • 5 Study days though out the year • A very social workplace • A large number of self learning packages • Access to post graduate programs • Locally based nurse educators at all Base Hospitals and Regional Hospitals and Cluster based educators at other sites 1 Rural & Remote Transition to Practice (RN) Program Rural and Remote Clinical Rotations With the flexibility of the Rural and Remote Transition Program you have the opportunity to undertake one or all of your clinical rotations in a rural and/or remote community. Transitional RNs can complete their entire 12 month program in one rural or remote facility or rotate around 2 different facilities. These programs allow newly graduated RNs to develop advanced practice skills and clinical leadership in a unique clinical and community environment. Baradine MPS is a small rural hospital and health service. It provides emergency services, acute and subacute medical inpatient services, low and high care residential aged care services. Health One Blayney is collocated with the Multipurpose Service providing General Practice, and a range of primary and community health services within an integrated primary care framework. Bourke District Hospital is an acute facility with 35 acute and 8 long stay beds. The acute beds comprise of 22 medical/surgical, 2 high dependency, 6 paediatric and 5 maternity beds. Bourke offers a 24 hour emergency department, physiotherapy, operating theatre (low risk elective and emergency surgery performed), comprehensive onsite pathology and medical imaging services; palliative care facility and specialist out patient services. Air ambulance support is provided from the NSW Air Ambulance, Dubbo Base. Specialist retrieval teams are dispatched from Sydney tertiary hospitals on a needs basis. It is located 40 kms south of the Queensland border. The Collarenebri MPS provides emergency, acute and sub acute medical inpatient, rehabilitation and palliative care services and residential aged care services. The Health Service also provides a 24 hour emergency service as well as resident and visiting community health service. Coonabarabran is a friendly country town of around 3,000 people with 11,000 living in the region. As the closest gateway to the majestic Warrumbungle Ranges, it's one of the best places in NSW to experience nature. The 24 our Emergency Department is covered by On Call VMO’s. The new purpose built MPS facility also provided a broad range of Community and Allied Health Services including visiting practitioners’ / clinicians. It also provides an on-site Helepad and plans for a 2 chair Haemodialysis Unit are currently underway. Gilgandra has four GP Practices in the town and the MPS services the township and surround area which has a population of 3,800. There are also 4 holding beds for patients being transferred to a referral centre as well as 4 beds for patients with minor conditions. Lightning Ridge is known for its Opal mining and relaxed way of life. With some 30 plus different nationalities, it is an interesting place to live and work. The health service provides a 24 hour emergency service as well as resident and visiting community health services. Acute services include accident and emergency, obstetrics, medical, high dependency, coronary care and surgery, ophthalmologic and dental. Outpatient services are provided for pathology, physiotherapy and radiology. On average Mudgee health service is involved in: 706 presentations to the ED, 250 outpatient xrays, 2953 community health consultations and 250 physio patients. There are over 200 deliveries every year and more than 800 surgical operations. Mudgee is famous for its honey, wineries, vineyards and gourmet foods. Typifying the building style of that era, the building has strong architectural appeal and has gained National Trust recognition. Peak Hill Health Service is a 10 bed facility consisting of 2 acute, and 8 nursing home type beds. Aged care services include an 8 bed accredited nursing home area, staffed with Assistants in Nursing with one Registered Nurse allocated in charge of the area every day. Nursing services provide care for patients in acute and aged areas as well as some community services including visiting specialists for ENT, Paediatrics’ and Surgery. The hospital participates in a trainee enrolled nurse program and supports 2 trainee enrolled nurses per annum.
