Inter Relationship of Magnesium and Antioxidant Potential in Diabetes Mellitus under the supervision
of Prof. DD Bansal, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India.
SUMMARY
Objective of the PhD study was to establish correlation between magnesium deficiency and oxidative
stress in diabetes since magnesium deficiency has been independently proposed as a state of increased
oxidative stress. The study found increased oxidative stress, dyslipidemia, ionic alterations and impairment in
the ATPase activities in blood/various organs in magnesium deficiency as well as diabetes in experimental
rats and most of these biochemical alterations were reversed by magnesium supplementation in these rats.
Strong correlation was also observed between magnesium depletion and oxidative stress in diabetic patients.
In brief, these findings suggest that magnesium depletion may be the causative factor partly responsible for
oxidative stress, dyslipidemia, ionic alterations or impaired ATPase activity in diabetes.
