Trash Mash
Trash Mash decorates lids for the recyclable cans in the classrooms to
help differentiate between bins for paper and plastic. This helps get the
students involved in recycling. Some recyclables are also used to help
decorate the lids that are made from recycled cardboard. We use old bottle
labels from the recycling bins in the classrooms and old newspapers. To begin
with, small groups help assess the state of the lids in each classroom. Then,
two days are reserved for students to decorate two lids per person. Last year,
we were able to decorate around 70+ lids for several classrooms that either
needed lids replaced or didn’t have any lids to start out with!

Science Days
Science Days aims to foster interest in science from an early age by showing
elementary school-age children simple science experiments. In this project,
we organize field trip(s) to Livingston elementary schools and set up a variety
of interactive or demonstrative projects, like watching a tornado in a bottle or
making Oobleck, and explain the science behind each experiment to the
students. Come join us if you enjoy teaching or doing fun experiments!

After School Speakers
The after school speakers project focuses on contacting local people who have
careers involved with various aspects of science to come and speak to our
honor society. They can have careers as varied as environmental engineers to
doctors to astrophysicists. The goal is to invite these speakers to our school so
that the honor society and the general student body can be exposed to real
life applications of science and explore possible career paths.

Tutoring
We organize review sessions in biology, chemistry, and physics for midterms
and finals. We also occasionally organize sessions for big tests that a teacher
feels students need more help with. This project requires volunteers in all of
the subjects listed above to tutor small groups of students.

Solar Energy Project
The solar energy project is a group that aims to spread awareness of
solar energy and advocate its use. As a project, we achieve these means by
doing research, making posters, and holding events. This year, we hope to
make public presentations at the Livingston Library and hold a solar car race
that is open to all. This project is a lot of work, but it is certainly rewarding.

Electronics Recycling
This project is devoted to helping the community recycle electronic devices.
Project directors will collaborate with the township in order to help organize
three electronics recycling and paper shredding events throughout the year.
Members of this project will volunteer at these events by helping to direct
traffic into the community center, move deposited electronics, and recycle
paper.

Tree Rearing for the Ecosystem of Earth
Do you love planet Earth? Would you like to make it even better? We want to
‘leaf’ a better environment for future generations by branching out and
planting trees. We’re not just barking at the moon here, we’re serious about
going out on a limb and making a difference. The root of this project is
communicating with the township about planting trees and educating your
fellow students about ways they can reduce their carbon footprint. Volunteers
are needed to plant, and to make posters to spruce up the school, or
presentations in public areas.

Induction Committee
The Induction Committee’s job is to plan everything concerning the
Science Honor Society induction ceremony and reception in May. The
directors for this committee will determine the order in which inductees will
walk into the auditorium to begin the ceremony, and they will decide who will
speak at the ceremony. Members of the committee will be delegated tasks
such as designing invitations and programs, finding musical performers for the
ceremony, decorating the auditorium and cafeteria, and buying food for the
reception.

Water Quality Project
With the Water Quality Group, we aimed to investigate what is actually present in our
local waterways that our community uses for drinking, showers, and other tasks. To do this, we
went to the Passaic River on the border of Livingston and Florham Park. Here, we took samples
of river water from various types of water such as standing water and running water. With our
water samples, we tested the water for phosphates, pH, and suspended solids. Once we
obtained our results, we presented our findings to the entire SNHS community via a poster.
