Brief account of your research interests with special focus on Nano Science and
Technology (strictly within 300 words):
Presently working on synthesis and characterization of Metal Matrix Nano
Composites(MMNCs) focusing to reinforce Carbon Nano Tubes(CNTs) and other nano
sized ceramics like SiC, Al2O3 into low density Aluminum/Magnesium/Titanium alloy
matrix effectively to achieve improvement in mechanical properties by reducing the
weight of the material. The bottleneck in the development of metal matrix nano
composites are the difficulty in uniform distribution of nano particles into the metal
matrix and thereby unable to achieve the desired mechanical properties in the
developed material.

It has been focused to overcome this difficulties through various techniques like
high energy mechanical stirring and ultrasonic cavitation techniques and also through
in-situ techniques. I have submitted a proposal to the DST Nano Mission to undertake
this project and expecting sanction as the work needs sophisticated equipments.
I have synthesized composites using MWCNTs in Al matrix through powder
metallurgy technique. It has been found that the increase in amount of CNT reduces the
homogeneous distribution which subsequently reduces the mechanical properties.
Further the powder metallurgy route has limitations in component size and complicity
hence not suitable for all applications. Therefore, I have planned to focus on casting
route to successfully synthesize the nano composite by overcoming the difficulties in
uniform distribution and wetability.
I am also in the process of obtaining better mechanical properties like wear,
corrosion, creep resistance through nano coatings. The processing technique of coating
the nano particles are the bottleneck in addition to the uniform distribution of particles
in this process.
