10. The programme aims to:
To provide a high-quality, research-led postgraduate education in social and cultural psychology;
To qualify students for a PhD research in the social sciences;
To provide knowledge of normally two specialist fields of social psychology;
To provide students with specialist knowledge of teaching social psychology in higher education
To equip students to contribute to the development of pure and applied social psychology;

11. Programme outcomes: knowledge and understanding; skills and other attributes
On successful completion of the programme, students will be able to:
 Review and critically evaluate theories, concepts and empirical research in areas of social and
cultural psychology;
 Understand the relationship between theory and method in social and cultural psychology;
 Understand the debate between competing paradigms in social and cultural psychology;
 Use the concepts and theories of social and cultural psychology to understand problems and
propose solutions in a variety of applied settings;
 Understand the strengths and weaknesses of a range of quantitative and qualitative methods
for empirical research in social and cultural psychology;
 Carry out research projects using a variety of methodologies and transfer research skills to
new problems;
 Design, conduct, analyse and interpret a significant social inquiry employing quantitative
and/or qualitative methodologies;
 Formulate a plan for research in several stages and keep to the timetable agreed with their

Teaching and learning strategy
Each course is taught by a combination of lectures and small-group classes or seminars. The
Methods course has a high proportion of workshops and practical exercises.
Assessment strategy
The courses are assessed by means of written examinations, a series of research assignments and
designs, exercises in statistics, formative and summative essays related to the substantive courses
and the project.

and a 3,000 word essay (100%)

14.Criteria for admission to the programme
To be considered for a place applicants should normally have a good honours degree in psychology.
Other related disciplines in the social and life sciences are considered depending on experience and
relation to psychology..

16.Methods for evaluating and improving the quality and standard of teaching and learning
Departmental mechanisms:
Pre-sessional departmental meeting (a) to review current courses and programmes and (b) to discuss
and agree proposals for new courses and programmes. Ongoing course review through the year
through the regular staff meetings. Annual (May/June) Teaching Efficiency meeting for all academic
staff, includes a review of all course teaching, an evaluation of changes introduced, views on further
development/improvements, resource issues such as space etc., and a discussion of any relevant
new policies.
School mechanisms:
 regular staff appraisal and review;
 improvements in teaching technique are effected by the Teaching and Learning Centre
through observations, advice and further training;
 induction programme and mentoring scheme for new members of staff;
 support of Guest Teachers by the lecturer responsible for a particular module plus the support
from the Tutor for Guest Teachers;
 centrally administered questionnaires by the Teaching Quality Assurance and Review Office;
 an improved system for ensuring that External Examiner’s comments/recommendations are
fed through to Departments and acted upon;
 the Teaching Quality Assurance Committee which regulates all aspects of teaching quality;
 the Graduate Studies Sub-Committee which oversees all graduate programmes and ensures
that significant changes to programmes and courses pass through a sequence of formal
