Program Report
December, 2014
As the year comes to a close, things continue to move at a fairly rapid clip in terms of continuing
to stay focused on the programs that are underway. Some of the specifics:
 Container Garden Boxes: we have firm commitments of at least $5000 for a
challenge/matching grant. We will be getting this money regardless of what we raise, but
it would be nice to match the funds. Letters were sent out two weeks ago to all of the
Workcamp participant/leaders from the past 3 years, and a Gofundme campaign was
started. In January, we will start on the building of shelves in the coach house and get
ready for planting seedlings. We will then start working more closely with the community
partners to identify DC residents for installation of the boxes.
 David S. Richie Fellows Fund: last summer we had two relatives of David Richie with
us. David Richie ran Workcamps in Philadelphia from the 1940’s-80’s, and also led
AFSC’s Workcamp efforts in post-WWII Europe. One of his relatives, after reading about
the renaming of William Penn Quaker Workcamps, suggested we also start a fund
specifically to support the leadership development (meaning having Workcamp veterans
come back to help run Workcamps). Cynthia Terrell is her name, and she stated that there
are many in the Philadelphia Quaker community that she can reach out to for funding
this. She and I are talking with David Richie’s daughters about the naming of this with
the hopes of rolling out a campaign in early 2015.
 Peaceable Kingdom Dinner: date, time, place are set, and the word is out electronically.
RSVP’s are also starting to come in. The next step is to get about 100 paper invitations
out in early January to a targeted list. Then we can start working on the program and
menu for the evening.
 Outreach: Brad attended the Friends Council on Education’s Service Learning
Networking Day in Philadelphia, and was on a panel talking about Workcamps. There
was expressed interest from Friends Seminary and Brooklyn Friends School in NYC and
Friends Central in Philadelphia to engage in some long-term partner planning.
Subsequent meetings took place with 5 faculty members at Brooklyn Friends School, and
communications are continuing with the others.
 In conjunction with another community partner, Helping Hands Inc., Josh and Greg
Baldwin, have spent much of the month of November and a portion of December handing
out coats from a clothing distributor to shelters all around DC. As of this writing they
have blanketed 6 shelters with donations of about 100 – 750 coats per shelter. This has
also allowed us to develop possible DC Workcamp partnerships as some shelters offer
volunteer opportunities.
 Saturday November 20th, Josh again in conjunction with Greg Baldwin founder and CEO
of Helping Hands Inc. handed out 200 turkeys, food, and laundry detergent in the Barry
Farms Community. Much of this work is important to keeping open channels for future
Workcamp activities as well as maintaining our community commitment and presence.
 Josh in conjunction with Gene Throwe of FMW has continued the Quaker worship
groups at GW and AU and on December 2nd, was able to bring WPH staff, FMW YAFs,
and college worship attenders together at the zoo lights event at the national zoo.

Brad, Byron, Josh, and Mike Gray have continued conversations about how to meet
requests made of William Penn Quaker Workcamps and our responsibilities to Quaker
social action programs around the country.
