Announcement 2
The Friedberg Genizah Images Site (accessible through //fgps.genizah.org).has been recently upgraded
in many ways, and we would like to draw your attention to the new capabilities available there.
1. Penn: About 2,000 images from the Genizah collection at CAJS – University of Pennsylvania,
Philadelphia, have been added to the site. A few images from that collection are still under
clarification with the library.
2. JTS: Some of the fragments from the JTS Genizah collection were missing when the digitalization
project was undertaken (fragments on loan, in conservation, misplaced, too fragile to be touched, just
missing, etc). For many of them microfilms of good quality were available. We digitized these
microfilms and added them to the site (a note accompanying every such digitized microfilm clearly
indicates this fact). Since the names (shelfmarks) of individual fragments were not always clear in the
microfilms, the entire volume containing the shelfmark is displayed, and the user can choose the
appropriate image.
3. Ruler: An on-line dynamic ruler has been added to the site. Using it, a user can measure accurately
the distance between any two points in the image: external or internal dimensions of the fragment,
distance between lines, margins, length or width of letters, etc. The user can also check that the system
is correctly calibrated by measuring 1 cm or 1 inch on the image of a (physical) ruler displayed with
the image. More sophisticatd options are available; see the “Help” text in the site.
4. Angles: An online dynamic tool for measuring angles has been added to the site; it allows the user
to measure the angle between any two lines (contours), by marking a point on each line as well as the
joint poin. One can measure for example the angle of the tail of a Lamed or a ‘Ayin, etc. See “Help”
for details.
5. Metadata: The list of details attached to every image, giving its various technical parameters, has
been improved.
6. Security: The security of the site has been greatly improved.
