The annual Students’ Union elections elect the following



MetSU Executive Committee 2011-12 (5 sabbatical and 5 part-time officers)
Six Independent Student Council Members
Seven delegates from MetSU to attend NUS Conference 2011 which will take
place 12-14 April 2011

The Student Council 2010-11
The governance of the Students’ Union is based upon the Student Council. It is the
governing body of MetSU. It exists to direct the activities of MetSU, decide upon
policy and to hold the executive to account. It has the power to dismiss the elected
officers from their posts if it so chooses. For full details of the roles and

Who sits on the Student Council?
 10 Executive Committee Officers
 8 Elected in spring 2009 elections

Up to 6 Independent Student Council Members - 3 North and 3 City Campus
 2 Elected in spring 2009 elections

Up to 13 Affiliated Clubs and Society Representatives
 To be elected by affiliated societies during October 2010

Up to 13 Student Academic Representatives (StARs)
 To be elected from StARS during October 2010

Up to 4 Co-Opted Representatives
 To be elected by the Executive Committee at the first Student Council
meeting on 28 October 2009
Societies
There are 13 seats on the Student Council for society representatives on the Student
Council. All societies registered with the Student Office will be emailed an invitation
to attend the Student Council meeting
StARS
Departmental StAR elections to be convened in October 2010. These will be
dependant on the departments supplying the Students’ Union with data on the StARs
in there departments. Each department has between 1-4 ‘departmental’ StARS who
sit on the Student Council:

Student Council Training
All members of the Student Council will be invited to attend a training session on
Thursday 28 October at North Campus, location TBC. Training will also be available
fro the Student Council Chairperson.
Student Council meeting 21 (a): Tuesday 26 October 2011
The first Student Council of the year always has lots of business to work through as
student have to be elected to a number of positions as well as motions from council
members and reports from the new SU Executive (elected officers). Therefore it is
split over two days, see table above.
During this meeting the Council will elect students to a number of positions and
committees:

Student Council meeting 21 (b): Wednesday 3 November 2010
This meeting will deal with:
 Matters arising
 Executive Reports (Reports written by the elected officers)
 Discussion of current issues
 Motions to be discussed and voted on
 Policy lapses (motions which have been Union policy for 3 years and is up for
re-newel)
 Guest Speakers
Motions can cover a wide variety of issues and should direct the work of the
Executive Committee in terms of funding and other resources. Any Student Council
member can suggest other discussions and speakers to the Council. For assistance
on how to phrase your motion please speak to a Student Union Officer
Deadlines Student Council
In accordance with the SU constitution if you wish to put forward a motion to Student
council you must do so 8 days before the Council meeting, members then have 4
days to amend any motions. They are then sent out to all council members 2 days
before the council meeting. The following table has all the deadlines etc for all the
Student Council meetings of 2011. These deadlines are subject to change so please
keep an eye on the Student Democracy Student site.
