ACTIVITY DETAILS 1. Objectives: The aim of this exercise is to help the cadets practice the phonetic alphabet and numbers so that they will feel comfortable enough with them and will have become proficient enough with them to use them during the radio procedures which are taught during Proficiency Level 3. 2. Instructions for Directing Staff: The cadets will be asked to play two games that allow for every cadet to respond and therefore practice the phonetic alphabet. 3. First the class should be split into teams. 4. The members of each team must spell their names using the phonetic alphabet. For each member who gets it right a point will be added to the teams’ total. Each cadet should also be given a number and asked to say D:\533567684.doc 1 it as it is pronounced over the radio. A correct pronunciation will result in 1 point being awarded. 5. When this is finished the instructor should set up a game of hangman on the board and have members from each team pick letters in turn. When they call out the letter they have to call it by its phonetic name. Each time the correct use of the word for that letter is used a point will be awarded to the team of the member who selected the letter. 6. The winner of the game of hangman will also be awarded points. The points should be enough to offset any extra players that a team may have due to an uneven class. 7. If a tie results or there is time remaining, the instructor can say a word and the first person to raise their hand will be selected to repeat the word using the phonetic alphabet. If they are correct 1 point will be awarded. 8. Instructions to Cadets: N/A 9.
