USP Peer Tutor Code of Ethics
1. Proficiency and knowledgeability have top priorities in my task as a tutor.
2. I understand that my relationship to the student is professional and not personal.
3. My major motivation is building my tutee’s self-confidence and independence.
4. My tutee deserves – and will get – my total attention.
5. The language my tutee and I share must be mutually understandable at all times.
6. I must be able to admit my own weaknesses, and will seek assistance whenever
I need it.
7. I will show respect for my tutee’s cultural background and personal value system.
Respect for my tutee’s personal dignity means I accept that individual without
judgment.
8. I will give honest feedback to the tutee I serve and will not insult him or her with
false hope or empty flattery.
9. I will strive for a mutual relationship of openness and honesty.
10. I will not impose my personal value system or lifestyle upon my tutees.
11. I will not use a tutoring situation to proselytize my personal belief system.
12. Both the tutee and I will always understand my role is never to do the tutee’s
work.
13. I count on my student to also be my tutor and teach me ways to do my job better.
14. I will always do my best to be punctual and keep appointments, not only out of
courtesy but as an example for my tutee to follow.
15. I will maintain accurate records, lesson plans, and process data as expected and
required.
16. I will keep all information about the student whom I am assigned confidential.
17. I will do my best to stay abreast of the current advances in my field as it relates to
my work.
18. Making learning real for the tutee is what tutoring really means and is an
important part of my work.
19. I recognize that I may not have all the answers to student questions. In this
event, I will seek assistance in finding the correct information.
20. I will share any concerns I have with my supervisor.
21. My ultimate goal is to assist my tutee to become an independent learner.
