At the end of this module students will be able to:

CREATIVE WRITING
This module is designed to introduce students to the literary canon and
contemporary texts in order to develop creative writing skills in the major
forms of Literature: for example, drama, narrative fiction and poetry. The
module aims, by means of instruction, close reading of inspirational texts,
critical discussion and collaboration, to foster an understanding of how to
create unique and engaging texts that demonstrate the conventions of a
range of creative genres. The course will serve as an introduction to creative
writing at a level which will prepare students to meet the demands of
Higher Education. In addition it assists students to develop skills in
expressing their responses orally and in writing
Module Content
The module is split into two units:
Unit 1:

Unit 2:
9 credits
 The characteristics and qualities of different types of
prose writing as applied to creative writing.
 The different genres, vocabulary, form and style.
 Differences between narration, description and dialogue
and the effects which each can create.
 Texts that employ a range of techniques and texts that
write about a set theme in a set style and for a set
purpose.





Different genres within dramatic and poetry form.
Meaning through vocabulary, form and style.
Poems across a range of poetic forms.
The techniques used to convey meaning.
Styles of other authors within your writing.








Create a Prose piece of writing – Short-story
Explain the devices used within the short story
Create a prose piece of writing – two monologues
Explain the devices used within the monologues and how they
emulates the style of a selected author.
Create a portfolio of poems that reflect a critical understanding of
poetic tradition.
Explain the devices used within the poems and how they emulate the
range of styles.
Re-create or add a scene to a selected piece of drama
Explain the devices used within the scene and how this emulates the
style of a selected author
Assessment
Assessment in Unit 1 is by a 1300 word short story (with a 200 word
evaluation) and two 400 word monologues (with a 200 word
evaluation).
Assessment in Unit 2 is by a portfolio (500 words) of poems (and a 500
word evaluation) and re-create or add a scene to a play (1000 words plus
500 word evaluation).
If you are interested in this module you might also be interested in, for
example, English Language or English Literature.
The Higher Education Foundation Course is open to anyone and no
formal qualifications are needed for entry to the course. However
achievement in numeracy and literacy at Level 2 or equivalent would be
advantageous, and in some cases expected, where specific skills are
required.
