Undergraduates in Biology: Interested in getting teaching experience at the college level? A new program for Undergraduate Teaching Assistants (UTA) gives highly qualified undergraduate students an opportunity to teach their own section of an introductory level biology course. Requirements: Undergraduate Teaching Assistants in the Program in Biology must have a minimum of a 3.3 GPA and junior or senior status and must take either EEB 401, Teaching College Science, or the standard GSI training course for Program in Biology GSIs prior to or concurrently with the term in which they are teaching. Waivers to this requirement require approval of the course instructor. Further information on GSI training will be provided for successful applicants to the UTA program. Applications: Interested students should submit the following to the Biology Program Committee (1111 Kraus Natural Science or landersn@umich.edu) by November 30 for winter term courses and by May 1 for fall term courses: a) statement of why you would like to teach and your qualifications, including any previous teaching experience b) transcript (unofficial copy is acceptable) c) a list of courses you would like to teach in order of preference The Biology Program Committee will review applications and make recommendations to instructors of courses; final approval of a UTA rests with the course instructor, who may require a personal interview. UTA’s can either register for EEB 302 or MCDB 412 to obtain course credit for their teaching experience, which does not count toward their concentration. Alternatively, they can receive an appropriate stipend. For questions about the UTA program, please write Dr. Lynn Carpenter, 1111 Kraus Natural Science (landersn@umich.edu).
